Sat Nav Problems due to NON GENUINE Windscreen replacement
Hi all, VERY SORRY TO ASK SO MANY QUESTIONS, I hope you all dont mind.
Does anyone have the built in Sat Nav and replaced the windscreen for any reason with a non genuine Chrysler windscreen ie a different brand? If so has this caused a problem with reception on the Sat Nav Unit.
The reason I ask is that this is now the excuse for my sat nav not working, at some point due to a crack the previous owner replaced the screen however not with a genuine Chrysler screen. Thus according to the dealer, the sat nav atenna is not able to pick up the signal properly. This is despite the fact that it transmits hundreds of miles into space and back again in order to tell me where to go, but it cant get through a pane of safety glass. HEAVEN FORBID IF AN AIRPLANE GOT IN THE WAY!!
I have never heard of anything so stupid in all my life...........anyone else agree or had experience of this?

Thanks James...........So could the windscreen cause problems with reception. It pics up nearly 29-32 sats according to the display which in the handbook seems to be a good reception
If it is picking up sat signals, then I don't see how the windsheild is the problem. I am not sure where the antenna for the GPS is since my car is not equipped with NAV.
With most GPS units, 2 signals will give you 2D, 3 or more signals will give you 3D which includes altitude.

I have read on GPS forums about units not locking on due to the car having an electric heated windshield. These cars actually have a micro-thin sheet of metal laminated between two pieces of glass causing the GPS signals to be blocked or shielded. Not sure if your windshield is the problem or not.
Maybe someone can chime in if a remote antenna can be hooked up to the unit?

It's a load of hogwash. Take it back to your dealer, show them that it's picking up satellites and tell them the aftermarket windshield is NOT an excuse for it not working.

The receiver is placed under the dash behind the nav unit as shown in the attached instructions, sitting on the dash it must look messy and be irritating.
These signals can go through glass no problem, you are picking up signals, so how he can say what he says is typical dealer BS.

Fitted as standard so im told, the sensor actually just looks like an alarm sensor its not offensive in any way at all. But I too think it's bullsh*t that the fact it cant pick up the signal is due to the windscreen. It has ample number of sats registering according to the book.

You have seen the official installation drawing and yet you still believe it should be fitted on top of the dash?
Is this a new or used unit?
Who installed this unit?
Have you followed the instructions on how to set the system up?
You have been pretty thin on all the details so far, there are people on this forum that can solve most problems but none as far as I know can read minds and the Amazing Kreskin cannot be reached these days.

EASY PEZIE...........Just get an aftermarket gps from a friend and set it on the dash to disprove the uninformed tech comments. For that matter show him............Enjoy Woody

1) Better look at that display again, I have never heard of a 32 "channel" GPS. Besides, there are only 29 or 30 active GPS birds anyway, and you can't see all of them at once! I question what you are really seeing in the display, you surely are NOT tracking 30 birds at the same time. Now, it MAY be that it's telling you that is HAS seen all 30 birds, maybe that is what it is telling you. If so, fine. But my Lowrance has a screen that tells me what birds it CURRENTLY sees. Which display are you looking at?
2) There is some glass that is treated in a way that it becomes RF proof, we have seen this in the newer school buildings. The materials used are there for energy efficiency and UV protection - it's effect on RF (radio frequency) energy is an unintended side-effect.
Additionally, in the past two years, we here (at a small Motorola radio shop) have had two instances where aftermarket glass treatments (tinting) were actually causing the officer's radar to not work properly - the glass had become RF proof! So you see, there IS some possibility that the glass has been treated in such a way to make it RF proof, but I'd guess that this is not the case unless this glass is really tinted dark. Is it?

My NAV system recently starting malfunctioning. It is no longer picking up a satellite signal. When I press the satellite button, it reads back with a big "0". Any ideas as to the solution? Faulty receiver? It's an SRT-6 with less than 10,000 miles..
I tried the Nav for the first time in a couple months yesterday, and it just reads "off map" and won't point to the correct North. I already tried the reset, and that changed nothing. The North arrow does not point north, as makes sense if it is not picking up a satellite signal. Also I put a 5" strip of window tint at the top edge of the windshield a couple weeks ago. But I don't see how that could be the problem..doesn't the tint just block UV rays and reduce the amount of visible light let in?
Any ideas are most welcome.
