Angry Radiator Fan

Hi, everyone! I have an '04 base coupe with 35,305 miles, I am the 2nd owner, bought the car in February of '08. The car has been running perfectly fine, until yesterday. After about 5 minutes of driving I noticed the low coolant light come on in the dash, once I got into city traffic I noticed the temperature gauge start to creep up slowly. I heard the clicking sound of the fan trying to kick on, but it would click right back off. About 3 minutes later the temperature gauge was all the way past the H and my air conditioning stopped working. I parked the car and a few hours later checked the coolant resevoir, completely full. After the engine cooled I tested the 50 amp fuse and it had continuity. I then ran 12v to the fan motor, but it did not turn. I also manually tried to turn the fan blades while the engine was off with battery disconnected, but it felt like the fan was seized and would not turn. I contacted Chrysler and they advised that there was no recall listed for my car, other than something to do with the radiator inlet hose. They took my info, vin #, and mileage and said they would contact me tomorrow to see if the repairs could be covered. Has anyone else had this issue? I have seen a lot of things about the "E19" customer satisfaction notification online, but it looks like my car was not included in that due to the assembly # of 5,308. I also ran a check on the VIN on Chrysler's website and it shows there are no outstanding recalls ot repairs for my vehicle. Any past experiences you could share and/or advice would be greatly appreciated! Should I drive the car to the Chrysler dealer which is approximately 30 miles from home or should I have it towed in with the engine cold?

Thanks, Kara

Kara, had the same exact problem. It turned out to be the bearing in the fan motor. Need to take fan out of it's cradle (easy) then press the motor out of fan assembly (hard) than go to NAPA and purchase the bearing, I paid $16. and they got it for me the next day. Assembly not too difficult. Good luck.

I'm not sure about our fan assembly's but I do know on some you can just replace the motor as an assembly, just have to remove the fan blade assembly and then swap out motors. Can this be done on our type of fan instead of having to replace bearings even though cheaper? Has anybody else done this before, or do you have to get the whole complete assembly? then yes replacing the bearings would be cheaper, but I would still be concerned on the condition of the windings and such.

To my knowledge the fan and motor are a complete assembly. You can pick one up on ebay for about $100 to $150. The motor is a press fit on the fan so it is a bit of of a job but can be done with a little bit of luck and #**#

Thanks for all the advice, guys! Keep it coming! I called my local NAPA auto parts store and talked to the parts counter manager, he checked for a replacement radiator fan motor but came up empty. I suggested he check a Mercedes SLK 320 and that came up empty also. He was unable to provide any other options, so I hung up. After reading a few of your posts I called him again and asked about the bearings and that came up empty also. Is there a part # that I should be referencing when calling? He wasn't able to do anything by description....

Thanks, Kara

So, going from what I've read and considering that I can hear the module "clicking" trying to signal the fan to turn on I am going to assume it is the fan motor. Can I get the motor alone or does it come with the fan assembly??

Thanks!!
Kara

Now might be a good time to say it: The "Low Coolant Light" is not just that, it's really a light that indicates "I see a problem with the cooling system".

It can be low coolant, but it also indicates, in general, problems with the cooling system.

Which, I guess, you have figured out by now!

Yeah the infection is beginning! Must be something in the air lol. I currently have the same problem but my fan is not seized it just spins when it wants to. If you turn your a/c on and your fan is not spinning then yes your fan seems to be the culprit. Until mine goes all fully I am not going to replace it just yet. I'd say mine works about 80% of the time just randomly will not spin. I'll fix it sometime soon. Everyone else get some respirators for your fans before you get infected too!

Just for #!*&@ and giggles I called the Chrysler dealership closest to me inquiring about the fan assembly...(btw, it is all one piece, motor is not sold seperately) and they want $454.00 for it!! I laughed.

Oh, and Chrysler called me back today and informed me there was NO recall or TSB issued about the radiator fan motor, only for the radiator inlet hose in 2004. I mentioned the E19 Customer Satisfaction Notification and she had no idea what I was talking about, nor did she care. She DID however inform me that when buying a used vehicle an extended warranty is a good idea. Wow, thanks for enlightening me, Chrysler.

It's a failure that seems to be showing up more and more as time goes by. My fans making all kinds of racket. Sounds like a tumbler. Only 5000 miles on mine (most at 6000 rpm ) I'll do some real detective work next week to be sure exactly what's going bad.

Kara, I destroyed the receipt for the bearing and therefore cannot give the part number to ask for. iF YOU TAKE THE DEFECTIVE BERING TO NAPA or ADVANCE THEY CAN TAKE THE MEASUREMENTS WITH A CALIPER AND THEN LOOK UP A BEARING CROSS REFERENCE. IT TURNS OUT TO BE A PILOT BEARING. MY FAN HAS BEEN WORKING PREFECTLY WITH THE REPLACEMENT BEARING.

Kara, not sure of you location, sometimes makes a difference in prices.
The part # for the fan assy is 5101 095AA. If you search that # on Google you will get the 2004 parts catalogue.
if you want to buy from a parts supplier, ROCK AUTO has a 5****** rep
search Chrysler, then year, then Crossfire.

2004 CHRYSLER CROSSFIRE 3.2L 3200cc 195cid V6 FI (L) SOHC : Cooling System : Radiator Fan Assembly Wiki Price
DORMAN Part # 620040 {#5101095AA} Fully Assembled for Ease of Installation
Fully Assembled for Ease of Installation; w/AC; Incl. Shroud, Motor & Blade $174.99

You may get it cheaper by searching. Good Luck

Relax Kara, It has to be the fuse then. Simply replace the fan fuse (check first) and most likely it will fix your problem.

If not, it is probably the control module but then your old fan should have been fine. I never heard or read both parts going bad at the same time. It is generally either or.
