Wheel Bearing/Universal Joint
Thanks for the response guys.
I have the original rims on my car with farily new Hankook tyres. My 06 XF has done 60,000 kms (~38,00 miles). It sounds like I have exactly the same noise issue at ~ 30 - 45mph. I thought it was the tyres to start with, however the noise has gotten progressivly worse over the past few months and it sounds like an oscolating grinding noise which I wouldnt expect from tyres. I also have the minor shake at high speed (enough to be anoying).
I took it to a tyre shop last week to see if wheel balancing or the tyres was the cause of these problems, however I was told both are in good shape.
I will replace the steering stabilizer (thanks for the tip).
I am thinking it has something to do with the brakes or the uni-joints. I'll keep at it and let you know how I go.
Cheers,
Brett.

I thought you would get a laugh out of this.
I called the Mercedes dealer last week to get a price on a new steering stabilizer, they said $141, and they had one in stock.
Out of interest I called the Chrysler Stealership, who said it would be... wait for it... $1,630.00!!! And they said there was none left in Australia or America, so it would need to be sourced from Germany, and would have at least a month leadtime!
Needless to say I purchased the stabilizer from Mercedes, which made a noticable difference to the steering.
I'm still not rid of the grinding noise at low speed, I'll replace the break rotors next, hopefully that is the cause.
Cheers,
Brett.

Ebay in Australia will only show items that are in Australia or can be delivered to Australia, so it doesnt have many Crossfire parts.

BUT !!! - check out this shipping to Austraila :
( guess they buy a discounted one way passenger ticket for it )
