Oil filter assembly
Anyone have any idea what the purpose of the oil filter assembly is? Other than a place to put the filter and change a few O rings, why is it so long? Any idea what it does?
Thanks guys.
Thanks guys.

Thanks, 180. Maybe that has something to do with it. When you take it out, the "spike" fits in one opening, but there is another opening right next to it. I guess there's one path for incoming oil and another for filtered oil to go to the engine. It's just so much different than the spin-on type. That's one long "spike."

But seriously, it IS a different design, one that every other engine manufacturer should copy right away. WHY? Well, other than "I said so" - it gets you to the oil filter without crawling under the car. ALSO, if you unscrew the filter assembly about five turns, then drain the engine oil from below - by the time you come back to the filter, it's drained out completely and you can remove the filter and assembly without getting oil all over the place!
I't's a wonderful design.

I suppose a guy could create a line that screws into the drain plug hole & run it over to the side of the car where it would be easy to drain the oil without getting underneath or raising it up????

thanks to pizzaguy for the info on first unscrewing the oil filter first.
should have thought of it.
also many boats have a oil drain extension line from the oil pan to elsewhere.
sometimes an auxiliary pump is needed.
i have a setup on my carver for this.
thanks again to pizzaguy.

Marking the engine and the filter holder with a line will also enable you to re tighten the holder with the new filter on it to the old position. This is handy if you are unsure how much torque to apply. At least it will be as tight as before and you should be OK.
Some say that their cars have this mark already.

I think its a german thing. BMW have the same type of filter assembly but I haven't come across on that is as long as ours. They generally on have two or three O rings on them.
The new Chrysler "Pentastar" engine also uses a oil filter element on top of the engine; guess what company did that portion of the engine design? Mercedes. Back when Daimler was running Chrysler.
