Default Buzzing noise after shut off!

When turning ignition off a buzzing sound continues indefinitely coming from the engine. It's not any fan nor belts.

I've had to disconnect battery a few times now.

Any ideas what it is.

Can you localize the buzzing sound a little more precisely than 'engine' ?
front ? rear ? left/right side ? frequency ? ( sounds like electric razor etc ... )

Electric razor would be a good way to describe it. Or a remote airplain.

I can't pinpoint the exact location. Somewhere in the front of the engine by the middle area.

I hope that helps you help me!

Most likely : the electric emissions air pump.
Take the top off the plastic box by the battery and remove the big orange 40 amp fuse from the relay control module ( that's the module closest to the engine ).

does the buzzing go away ?

Check out small electric pump near front o/s headlight on uk cars. It is used for circulating hot water for heater blowers when engine turned off.by holding the water pipe going to heater in that area you may feel vibration of pump running.hope it helps.

That is called the 'REST' system, if that is on, you should see a red light on in the button on the heater / AC control panel.
However, I do believe that this resets to off with each cycle of ignition on / off.

So, I have this problem and removing the fuse has stopped the noise. Thank you very much!

What does removing the fuse do other than magically stopping the noise, how do I do a proper fix etc.?

Cheers again

This most likely means that the contacts on the aux air pump relay in the RCM are fused together in the closed position. Remove the RCM and contact tighed1 at tighed1@hotmail.com for instructions on where to send it.

EDIT : I see you are over the pond, might be easiest to find a replacement RCM at a breakers .

( If you won't ever need to pass emissions inspections, just leave the 40 amp fuse out )

Thanks for your reply. I had a look at how I'd go about replacing the RCM this morning, put it back in with the fuse and it seems fine! Could it be one of the wiring connectors was loose causing this? Obviously I know the temporary figures, now if it happens again.

Cheers again.
