Default Water leak in hatch - on an N/A - How to remove hatch trim?

Hey guys,

I found plenty of threads about water leaks in the SRT6. I have a base coupe and had quite a bit of water standing beneath the foam.

I dried it up and ran water down the car -- the leak is streaming down the black panel just to the left of the door lock. I am pretty confident it is coming from the spoiler area -- but I can't figure out how to take the trim off the hatch door. There's one Torx bit in the handle area.

Any tips? Luckily for me, my locking mechanism is still functional..

There's a screw cap where the hand-hold on the beige trim is. Pop that off and you'll see a Torx screw(T25 I believe). Remove the screw and pull down on the plastic. There are six plastic retainers that hold it on. From there you'll see the 14 or 16 10mm nuts that hold the assembly to the hatch. Remove them and carefully lift the spoiler assembly out. I ran a bead of ultra-flex black RTV on the inside of the foam liner that is already there, and another on the hatch around the perimeter of all of the bolt holes. No water gets in now!

Here's a link to the fix. You'll have to download the pdf file. https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...val-guide.html

Thanks a lot - just found this guide to removing the NA spoiler as well, guess I should have searched harder. For reference - https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...val-guide.html

One thing after another on a car I drive maybe 1,000 miles a year now.

If you think that there will never be a reason to remove whatever you seal with the silicon then go ahead. But if you ever need to remove it then you will have to destroy it to remove it.

Could the water be related to this problem instead?

Thanks - I pulled the spoiler last night and found one of my bolts was pretty rusty. In the bottom left. I checked the drain hoses for good measure as well. Going to clean it all up, seal it, and unplug the drain holes to make sure I don't end up flooding and Ruining the lock module in the future.

While your in the bowels of the lower trunk, slice an X in the center of each of the two well plugs leading out the bottom of the trunk. There is one on each side. The X will allow water to drain but the rubber has enough stiffness to keep debris from entering the lower bay area. The water in the bottom is especially expensive if it destroys the central locking module on the lower right corner of the right bay below the Styrofoam insert below the flip-up carpet. Before you reassemble, remove and inspect/dry out any moisture (hoping no water made it into it). Gook luck! Oh, pay attention to those who recommend using something that is easily removed, as you never know if you'll be removing that assembly at some time in the future.

Are there any suggestions in regards to an alternative sealant that would allow for future removal? If the little clear whatever that is there lasted for 10 years -- it was super difficult to pull the spoiler even with it compromised -- any similar products people know of that I can use?

The Mercedes Forum had a post recommending that the pump be placed in a nice plastic bag before buttoning everything down.
Makes a lot of sense to me.
Anther post said to put the pump in upside down.

I remember that, yes, I was also wondering if that whole assembly can be lifted up and secured higher in that bay. Sealing it inside something might not be OK if a source of air is needed to operate that air pump. If you seal it in a bag, you might just suck too much of a vacuum in there and make it run constantly looking for air. Don't know enough how it gets (and how much) air it needs to operate normally. If it takes it from the exterior of the case and not any of those air lines, it might run out of air while running.

I did not say seal the bag, it's not your lunch. LOL
Just have it sitting loosely in the bag to protect the bottom.
