Could you tell me which exact one you purchased from Amazon? Was it the one at http://tinyurl.com/p2htnfz ?

Thanks,
Don

I have always "old schooled it" but am now up for using an extractor. It seems that they remove as much as draining and would certainly be easier.

Don and others...here it is. You will not be disappointed...worked the first time. I will say I did wrap Teflon tape on the 2 treads just to get a tight seal...even before I tried it.

Thanks a bunch...I would have probably never found that one. Don't really need it for another 4,000 miles but just as well get it now so I don't forget it.

THe current recommendation is Mobile 1 5W40. In the heat of the south, I run 5W40 these days in the winter and 5W50 in the summer. (Well, I DID, when my car was a daily driver. Not sure what I'll do now, the new one is garaged most of the time.)

Every oil approved is right here:

MB 229.3 - Multigrade engine oils (Specification 229.3) - Mercedes-Benz Specifications for Operating Fluids

Many guys run Royal Purple, I think some here have more than 50,000 miles on their car with no issues using it. We are long past the warranty period, so that is one reason that you can wander from the recommendations.

Yep. I'm at the stage of my life where ....If I'm going to lay on my back and reach upward.....it will only be for one thing. And isn't going to be for changing the oil.

Here's a link to another reference I posted some time back on motor oils that meet various M-B specs:

https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum/465262-post6.html

As you can see, there are quite a few motor oils that fully meet the M-B specs for these engines.

Later,

The Valvoline SynPower 5W-40 falls under the 229.5 spec for the XFs. All is good....

Time for my semi-ignorant question. The specs call for 2 (two) MB oil specs for our motors, doesn't it? If so, should both specs be applied as a filter for the approved oils, or will one OR the other be acceptable? I use Mobil1 0W-40 as listed in the manual and engine compartment but am very curious as this always has been an ongoing question/concern. My main reason for continuing to use it (besides the specs) if if I don't, I may be causing a problem for me with my LPW warranty in the future. This LPW is a huge asset for me unless they rule the interpretation of 'lifetime' as some arbitrary digit/mileage.

The 229.5 spec is basically an upgraded list to the older 229.3 spec and includes many additional 0W-40 grade oils that were probably not available for the 229.3 spec testing, or were tested after the previous spec. You'll find the same changes going on with the 236.xx ATF trans fluids.

FYI - most Chrysler/Merc dealers in the south use Pennzoil 5W-40 as the OEM replacement for their dealer oil changes!

Per my last mechanic MOBIL 1 is not that good, it holds a lot of contaminants. I am using a new Penzoil made from natural gas right now. I'll get the name of the oil he said was best, either Havoline or Valvoline.

You have to know the context of the comment. Mobil 1 0w-40 is a real good oil for an internally stock engine. That good compared to what? Other viscosity's, don't know if all are good or not. The Mobil 1 hate comes from owners of internally modified engines with aggressive cam profiles that wiped the cam lobes off the shaft when the recipe was changed years ago. At least that's what I've read and been told.

As far as the contaminants … I don't believe it for an instant. I have oil reports on my used oil. No signs of anything abnormal or unusual. No contaminants.

I've read really good reports on the Pennzoil 5W-40 Ultra.

Les
