I think you have to get those via the dealer network; I would demand that a new key/remote or set of new keys come with the car or make a special $ deal if you find one key acceptable.
I think the cost of new one will be pricey.

When I picked up my Roadster, the salesman told me that a replacement key for the XF would be around $140.00.

The salesman told me that a new key would have to come from Germany and would cost about $400!! Holy crap!!
However after looking at the key I think that it could be traced and cut on a milling machine. The small drive pin would have to pushed out to remove the actual key from the plastic case.
This is project that my machinist next door neighbor and I need to get around to.

That is not as simple as you think. Inside the key is a special chip that work together with the lock on you steering wheel and with the car head unit too. Only if the key has the right chip with the right code on it then the key will work on your car. No other key work. Every key is made in Germany to your VIN # and that is why it is so much money. BUT 400 bugs are toooooooo expansive. Here in Germany those keys cost around 120-200 bugs.

hahaha "bugs" its "bucks" not bugs, thought that was funny. i work with a bunch of mexican guys at lexus and they are trying to teach me spanish, so i get laughed at all day cuse im horrible at it. also yes steffen is right, you cant just mill a key and have it work there is a chip inside the key that is married to that particular car, if you lose a key your screwed, as for cost, not sure about it but how bout you ask your dealer have all the paperwork written up like your going to buy the car then refuse to sign it until they order you a new key at no cost, they wont back out then...goodluck!

New keys typically cost £70 ish I've found. Either tell the seller to get it or knock that amount off the price. (Obviously call a dealer and check the amount first.

The seller won't get a new key made or drop the price by the cost of a new one?! Jeez, that sounds really dodgy to me. You sure it isn't stolen?

Hi
I am sure it is not a " HOT " car , seller is a used car dealer.

I would be concerned that someone out there has the other key to my car. Before I considered buying that car I would check to see if the keys can be programmed to another code, so the other original key would no longer start the car. Of course they could still open the doors.

A reputable "used" car dealer should get an extra key for you; you said you were passing on the car so that is probably a good thing.

When I bought my '04 coupe, it came with two master keys. Why did you only get one?

Unless the actual metal key part has a chip embedded in it somehow, I would think that the chip might be in the plastic housing. But, I will see what I can find out.
$120-$140 per key sounds like a better price than the $400 I was quoted, but still what a price.

I just purchased a used (mint-must have been a previous owner's midlife chrisis car) White 2004 XF with 3153 miles for $23K here in Tampa, FL. I ran into the same thing with the dealer... only one key. I beat them up enough on the price and said screw it and went to the Chrysler dealer yesterday. The key (in the system) was $170 and will be duplicated from the master on file in Germany. It will take 5 weeks to receive. The cost to program the two keys (due to the chip security in the key) will be another $40. The key will go in my safe for a rainy day. Better to have it now than lose the main key and be without the ride for a month.
