Strange sound at 60 mph...
I've just bought a Crossfire Coupe 2004, lovely car but there is a strange sound when i am driving at about 60 mph, it disappears at 70 mph.
Does anybody have the same problem or know what it is?
Best regards,
Peter

It sounds like a whistle, i thought it was the "wing" back, put i put it down and the sound was still there.
The guy i bought the car from said, that it was from the tyres, the tyres are Michelin Pilot Sport 235-35-19.

I have the same tires and get some road noise, but nothing that sounds like a whistle. Could it be you are hearing some wind noise coming through the side windows? Have you checked the tire pressure?
I am assuming you're actually running 255/35/19 tires and the '235' was just a typo.

nope; its just a property of the rear end gears. my fathers mustang did the same thing. he had 4.10's of course, so it was at least an indicator of some cool gears. i guess not so much with stock 3.25s we have. oh well.
I get a whine that seems to be coming from the rear axle / differential. It starts around 70 mph and gets louder with speed.
If the noise diminishes when you let off on the gas, it's a rear end issue. If it stays the same, it's probably tires.

Most definitely rear axle whine. Especially if you let up or get on the gas and it disappears. Thats the way mine is anyway. From about 60 mph to 80 mph. I was reading a thread on the MB boards from a guy that had this same issue and the MB tech said yep, thats not right and ordered up a new axle assembly and the noise was gone. Do think our five fingers dealers would do that for us. I think we need to see how many actually have this issue. I think it is alot.

As you describe it, it is the rear differential. The problem is a known issue and has been documented by DC. Have your dealer look-up noise, rear end and it should come up as a known defect. No matter what they tell you, it is not normal. The gears are not lined up correctly. DC has replaced several rear ends because this issue.
Good luck.
Good luck.
Wow, I just noticed this. I have the same thing...a high pitched whine coming from the rear end when on the throttle at highway speeds. Just got the car less than two weeks ago, but still under warranty.
Is this something they'll fix? Also, is it something that will get worse/cause damage?
