Buttery smooth? Granted I only found two references that alluded to that, but it shows how much subjectivity there is when comes to things as visceral as "feel". As has been stated before, I think I'll really need to take a real world drive in both before I make my decision. But the reality is, for me at least, I don't know if I'd ever be happy with the Auto, no matter how well it works. I just love to be part of the driving experience and for me that entails being able to clutch, shift, downshift etc, etc. I've always felt more with a stick as though I'm the master of the vehicle.
Thank you for all your interesting and knowledgeable opinions. It's helped me a lot!

definitely i think that the stick does have some issues i have had smoother shifting cars but overall its not too bad i mean i had to have the synchronizers replaced but it was a warranty issue and wasn't a big deal other than that its not too bad i wouldn't have this car in an autostick its a sports car and shifting is part of what its about to me but to each their own i suppose just gonna have to test one out and see ...

I also have the 6 speed. I have never had a problem with gear popping out, but I know others have. Like +fireamx said, take it for a long spin and test for yourself.
Although first gear reminds me of the old "granny" gear, I still use it. I have gotten used to it being rather weird LOL. The rest of the gears are great. Oh yah, the reverse gear? Sometimes I have to try a couple of times. You have to lift UP, then over...makes it a tad awkward, but hardly so bad I am affected by it.
Just drive and you'll see if you really like it or not. It is different from all the other manual tranny's I have had...but then the Crossfire is different from anything I have ever driven too! I love it.

I've owned both an old German Volkswagen and German Opel manuals and the Crossfire transmissions is no stranger than either of the previous German cars in my stable. I think that its just one of the "characteristics" of the German manual.

I have a six speed and have no problems with it at all. All shifts are clean and direct. I get no pop out and reverse never fails.
With the six speed when I shift from 1st to 2nd I just keep a wee bit of pressure (palm) towards me (driver side) as I am making the shift, (the same pressure is used if downshifting from 2nd to 1st). From 2nd to 3rd I use no pressure as my gearbox seems to want to go into 3rd from Second without any application of pressure. Nice. 3rd to 4th is the same simply a pull back, no pressure.
Going from 4th to 5th I use palm pressure applied towards the passenger side as I am making the shift. Likewise from 5th to 6th.
That is the technique I use and it works very well and the trannie likes it. You do not have to use much pressure on the shifter BTW.

i really like the creative paint scheme on the beetle. nice job!

as for the jetta gli...this car is the "best bang for the buck" if you need a 4 door. what a great looking car with all the important parts (wheels, seats, suspension & stance, chin spoiler, rear spoiler, rocker panels, etc). i have 2 friends that have this car & love it. the new jetta just doesn't do for me. they sent the last generation out with a hit.

I have an '05 6 speed roadster and I love it. I think it could be smoother with a better syncro throws, but I have definitely seen worse. I think the better the driver, the less of a problem it is for quick shifting. If your inexperienced with racing through the gears of a manual it may be real problematic. I still prefer the manual for the control of the gears and fun.

Thanks for the kind comments. I miss the GLI a lot with all of the problems I am having with my Roadster.
As for the others, there is no competency or experience that will compensate for a transmission popping out of gear...I am a pretty big guy and can't hold it in there...

More good news from most of the posts since my last. Kind of a trip that I couldn't find those TSBs. Guess I'm google impaired. Sounds like most of the problems have come from earlier cars. I can get used to the feel if the tranny's sound. That is unless it feels like the old bugs linkage. As much as I loved them old bugs, shifting them had the feel of stirring mashed potatoes and once in gear they slopped around like the linkage was busted. Just a very unsatisfying thing considering how fun the rest of the car was.
Try the following:
TSB: 21-005-05
SUBJECT:
First Gear Synchronizer Enhancements
Issued Feb 5, 2005
Its for replacement of the 1st gear synchronizers if the transmission pops out of 1st.

You know I drove one of those 6 speed manuals, did not care for it... I felt the clutch needed to be spring loaded and the shifter also needed to be spring loaded... it was slow to shift and kinda just laid there, and the clutch released like it was on a walker... did nothing for me... please understand I when to the dealership looking for a standard shift transmission... But what can I say?
Actually Firebase, what you describe sounds much like the old bug linkage I described in an earlier post. If that is truly the case across the board, and I'll know after I drive one...it looks like I'll have to settle for the S2000. I just can't see me driving a car of this nature with an automatic.
