Default Gear indicator

When I first got my XFire a couple of months back, I didn't notice that next to the odometer there is a small window that the "auto" guys must have a display of what gear they are in..like P R D, etc. Is this correct? My thoughts were to maybe have an indicator there for what gear the "manual" guys are in.....1 2 3 etc. I know on some of my past motorcycles, there was a gear indicator built into the instrument cluster, and I have seen aftermarket indicators for motorcycles. Was kinda nice when going hard into a corner, was I in third or fourth or whatever. Just thinking, As my Dad use to say, "don't think so hard, you might hurt yourself". Thanks Dad...miss ya!

Indeed, GB, the little window does display what 'gear' you're in.

Only for the automatics, correct? I have a manual and mine is blank.

Just searched "gear indicator", looks like only the auto guys have this feature.

For automatics only. Mine says "D" unless I tap the stick sideways, in which case it will show 1-2-3-4-D.

Yes for us Mountain drivers who love the fun of the Roads that twist...the gears show you 1-4 which is tapped with your back hand to the passenger and back to you when going down gears. For those I don't want to worry about the shifting the "D" is for drive in the Auto mode. Nothing special here see it now in most new european cars and Lexas. All work the same, best of both worlds, that is why you have a Tac in your car. RPM Baby! try it out, fun.

I don't know why you would need an indicator for a manual, just look at or feel the stick (no purient comments necessary). My old Saturns had a "time to shift" light that used to drive me nuts. After a half millon miles in manual cars, I don't need to be told when to shift.

And to continue the rant, who needs a car that can park itself? What happened to being able to DRIVE a car??

For me and my manual, I don't need no stinkin indicator.

I've been stickin it for so long, I rarely even look at the tach (except maybe when I'm pushin the high end of 4th or 5th gear).

I almost always shift on engine noise, and the situation at hand...

I only noticed the of display when Jake @ Eurotune asked me about the blank square when tuniing me @CAA ST Louis, I'm auto stick and only hear the motor and and the wind, I've always driven to the feel of the road and never relied on gauges

Sure would be nice if the autostick told you what gear you were in all the time rather than just D when you are in automatic. Nice to see it say 1,2,3,4,5 as it went up the line.

My dads Z06 shows the gear and also arrows suggesting up and down shifting. it is a kind of cool feature that I wish I had even if I never used it.
