Engine Low oil Light...
- As WE all know one of the items to be done on a 7000 mile inspection was change the oil and oil filter. I had this done last week at the Dodge-Chrysler dealership where I bought the car.
As WE all know you can check the oil level inside the car without taking the dipstick out. (The car came with no owner's manual so I learned on the go) I checked this oil indicator on the dashboard and got a -2.0 reading. This indicated 2 quarts of oil BELOW the MAX! Thinking the meter was wrong I checked the dipstick and to my horror I could see the engine oil was on MINIMUM....! I checked my bill and found that 6 quarts were added. I went online and found that a Crossfire needs 8.5 quarts of oil. The car was 2.5 below it's recommended level..!
I called the service manager
What a nightmare.... I still wake up at night in sweat after blowing up the engine in my dreams!

The very first thing I would always check is the oil level in this situation.
The dealers don't know enough to be trusted.
Glad you didn't do damage to the engine.
I think the dealer owes you a full refund for there mistake.
If they offer a free oil change next time ya come in , tell them no thanks.

As I read your story...and then reread it...I never once saw the words "checked dipstick".
I hope you just omitted this basic step. It's obvious the dealership did!

Shame on that dealer! D.I.Y. Its so easy (and cheaper unless they are giving you free oil changes) and you aren't gonna mess up. Another reason I try and keep my car out of dealer service.

Unbelievable!
Then again if I hadn't been a member of this forum I probably would do an oil change expecting to put maybe five quarts into the car.
Good thing I did my research!

Well if you were only two quarts low you had more than enough to drive back to the dealer with. There's only about a quart running through the engine at one time. The other seven are there so oil changes can be extended. Remember the low oil light does not signify low oil pressure.
Stupid me I guess, but how did you check the oil without using the dipstick?

and he agreed, on my suggestion, that a mechanic should come to my house and put 2.5 quarts of oil in my engine as I was not going to drive the car until the problem was fixed. A few hours later this was done....

KAYBAR - Not to make this dealer nightmare any worse, but are you sure they used Mobil 1 0W-40 synthetic oil?
If they didn't know how many quarts your car needed, there's a good chance they may have put regular 5W or 10W-30 oil in it.
Worth a check, and may be time to switch dealers.

As ignorant as the service tech seems, make dam sure that he used the proper oil when he supposedly changed your oil.It wouldnt be the 1st time some dipship service tech just grabs some 5w30 and puts it in.I agree with everybody else, when it comes to oil changes- DIY.-------------------------Dave

Thanks. I've read the manual (really) and never caught up with that. Thanks again,

..On top of this I found out myself that there is still a recall open for my car dating back to January 06 with regards to the cooling fan... I specifically asked the sales person when we bought the car if the car had any recalls open and he told me no!..
...I have only driven the car 120 miles and I already have a folder full of paperwork on the Crossfire...
Of all the dealer issues, fortunately your's is the most benign. I would think they'd be falling over backwards to make things right for you, including the radiator fan recall.
It's amazing they got the Mobil1 right and the quantity wrong. My dealer changes the oil for $20 (customer special) as long as I provide the synthetic (the deal is for dinosaur grade oil). The first time I went over with 5W-40 since it was easier to find and they refused due to potential warranty issues. So now I bring them only 0W-40.
When I purchased my SRT6, I had them verify the oil change and, as suspected, it was pure dinosaur. So as part of the deal they replaced the brand new oil with 0W-40. But I had to pull both my roadster and the SRT6 manuals out to show the dealer the requirement.
