My friend came over and tried to jump it and it would not crank. The inter lights would not even come on?

Well, that really doesn't mean anything...dead cell in the battery, failing to get a good connection....did the car run fine before this happened...

I would agree w/Doc - no lights in the interior & everything else dead like rock usually points to a bad battery; even attempting to jump it may not help. The best thing to do would be to replace the battery AND make darn sure the posts & clamps are clean as a whistle. Also make sure there's nothing obviously screwy with the ground cable!

This probably sounds like a sort of goofy 'blonde' reply. But this is a true story: 2008 XFire still under warranty -no power- called for service. The service guy could not get power to the battery with his battery pac. Nothing! I am beside myself - new owner, no power, no answers. Dealship is clueless. Turns out HE(contract individual) had not done something correctly, and called his mgr. Long conversation with mgr. He gave the correct instructions, and - connection made. Power to vehicle, and it was the ol' 'trunk is not closed securely' battery drain. OK - lesson learned!

I am happy to say that the roadster trunk in now ***always*** securely closed, and I learned that 'no power' does not always mean the XFire is the culprit.

Good point. The one thing i've learned here the short time I have owned a CF is to diagnose most electrical related issues to the battery first. Many of us old timers remember a time when one could start their vehicle and actually remove the battery and the car would keep running. Not now!! LOL Good luck.

Interesting comment for sure.

I always thought that once you had a car running, if you disconnect a battery lead, the car would just keep running, as power would just be drawn from the alternator.

Has any brave soul actually tried this on their Xfire to verify it as fact...???

Thanx...

Alternator doesn't supply power to the car, just keeps the battery charged. I had a battery with a bad cell on one of my other cars and it ran down and the alternator could not keep up. Died right there in the middle of a crowded road on July 4th. Cars before 1962 had generators and those were able to keep them running but there were probably two or three times the weight and not as efficient as alternators are.

Huh? If the alternator couldn't power the car, the battery would die on a long trip.

I have definitely driven post 1962 cars with an alternator, and no battery at all. I did it for months in a 70's Maverick with a stick. No battery in the car at all. I'd push start it and go. Whenever possible, I'd park on a hill to make my life easier.

I used to check if my alternator was still working by disconnecting the negative while running on my 64 Dart. The engine continued to run so everything OK. Of course no electronics on the old Dart other than the transistor radio.

Talking Re: Power Issue need help

Normal alternator will power normal car if the loads are not switched on too fast and allow it to drop out. WIthout the battery the voltage can surge and fry the car. You would try this is there was an electrical issue to begin with.

SIMPLE: Measure the battery voltage, remember it, start the car and see that the voltage is about 1 volt higher, this is a simple go no go test ONLY> WOODY

I'll assume the Xfire has a voltage regulator involved somewhere along the line, wouldn't part of it's function be to normalize spikes, besides to monitor/adjust the charge voltage across the battery...???

I always thought was how it worked on American cars...

Oops, just remembered ours is pretty much a German car...lol...
