The shifter does engage and the car does go into gear but there is fluid under the car(a few ounces) and since there is no dip stick I'm not sure how much is left and should i drive it to the mechanic(10 miles) or tow it. The shifter was an effect from the lock button accidently being on the dash. Why is there a lock button anyway?

More than likely, the puddle is a result of the "O" ring failure at the point where the Transmission harness cable inserts into the transmission. There is an "O" ring that fails and will leak, if left in this condition for too long, it is possible for the fluid to "wick" up to the transmission control module and ruin it. It is an easy and cheap fix. There are dip sticks available for our cars. Rob at NeedsWings dot com has them. Temperature of the fluid is important when reading the dip stick.

Got to drive that car more. A 2005 with only 36K on the clock? The lack of driving it and bringing everything up to normal operating temps is killing it. Gaskets, hoses, bushings and seals throughout are probably dry-rotting. You couldn't pay me to buy a XF with 5 miles on the clock that has been sitting for 15+ years. What a nightmare that would be. Don't let it sit... Drive it more.

I bought one with 3700 miles 4 years ago. Pushing 16,000 miles now. Would not hesitate to do it again. I would hop into it right now and drive cross country.

You can remove the dipstick hole cover if you know the trick of how break the seal and use it again, the instructions are on the forum somewhere or you can buy anew cover, they are cheap enough. Do not use a loose cover.
