Default "Clicking" noise when tranny put into Reverse

Just wondering if this is normal...the clicking noise (can hear it clearly) usually happens only on a cold start when putting the transmission into Reverse from Park...is this normal? Also it seems the transmission goes into Reverse a bit harshly when parked on an incline (such as a sloped driveway)...the car shifts fine when running.

Same thing mostly always when cold or first started. One metallic click (snap)...

I'd say one click...kinda sounds like something metallic popped...I think it comes from center/rear of the car.

AMGLover,

You may be right (you have been about many other things) but I think it is something other than the e-brake. It only does it after shifting into reverse upon cold startup (left overnight). I almost never set the handbrake and it only does it going into reverse. If I put it in D (skp R) it doesn't do it. Once the car has been driven, it doesn't do it again all day.

Well I paid attention and mine does it also from a cold start into reverse. I don't think it is a problem as my car only has 500 miles on it. Just a simple clink like a drive shaft u-joint thats needs lube or is worn. If it is a problem I hope we find out before it gets to be expensive.

Now the e-brakes are in the back side of the hub and are subject to lots of heat..heat makes things expand...expanding things push on other things. The e-brake is the old drum brake setup that relies on springs and things to keep thoses shoes off the drum. Additionally 99.9% of your stops are moving forward so rotational stress moves it in that direction.

Fast forward to next morning. Everything is cool and contracted back into position, you switch direction and the stuff that stuck together gets forced into the oposite direction - popping it loose- as oppose to grinding it loose going in the same [forward] direction. Maybe it's a caliper that needs to be lubed, but I still think it is more prone to be the e-brake...either way it needs some lube/check for tolerences.

whatcha think?
Hey, it worth having checked. Unfortunately this is one of those "....it only happens when...." issues. Experience with the (insert the brand of choice) service personnel, is if it doesn't happen the first time it is tried, the problem simply doesn't exist!

Thanks,

Hopefully if other cars are doing it, the clicking noise is normal...I have noticed sometimes it is one click and sometimes 2 when going from Park to Reverse on a cold start...I'll ask the dealer but given I had to diagnose the IC water pump for them (after they put in new supercharger and said opps that did not fix the problem), I'm not optimistic they'll have a clue...

Mine does this also...I honestly don't think it's anything to be worried about.

I also hear a clicking sound which can be a long as 10 seconds when I start the car prior to backing out of my garage. This clicking sound does not happen all the time.

I have a manual and my car does the same thing. Sound like your staring the car while the car is running (not as loud). Do the brakes still make an ajustment when backing up?

It sounds like a solenoid.
Either brakes? Theft deterant device? Our cars have so many wierd little gizmo's.
I've always figured it was normal and if everyone else is hearing it, well...

I have noticed this clink noise since I bought my car. It does not always make that noise in the
morning, but many times it does. I've put 107,000 miles on the clock, and I've always been a
little worried about that noise, but no problems so far.

I recommend checking the rear axel nuts. They come loose and spin just a little, then klink.
