"Clicking" noise when tranny put into Reverse
"Clicking" noise when tranny put into Reverse
Just wondering if this is normal...the clicking noise (can hear it clearly) usually happens only on a cold start when putting the transmission into Reverse from Park...is this normal? Also it seems the transmission goes into Reverse a bit harshly when parked on an incline (such as a sloped driveway)...the car shifts fine when running.

You may be right (you have been about many other things) but I think it is something other than the e-brake. It only does it after shifting into reverse upon cold startup (left overnight). I almost never set the handbrake and it only does it going into reverse. If I put it in D (skp R) it doesn't do it. Once the car has been driven, it doesn't do it again all day.

Well I paid attention and mine does it also from a cold start into reverse. I don't think it is a problem as my car only has 500 miles on it. Just a simple clink like a drive shaft u-joint thats needs lube or is worn. If it is a problem I hope we find out before it gets to be expensive.

Let's look at the situation; what is the last thing that you do when you park the car...release the brake pedal. Now the e-brakes are in the back side of the hub and are subject to lots of heat..heat makes things expand...expanding things push on other things. The e-brake is the old drum brake setup that relies on springs and things to keep thoses shoes off the drum. Additionally 99.9% of your stops are moving forward so rotational stress moves it in that direction.
Fast forward to next morning. Everything is cool and contracted back into position, you switch direction and the stuff that stuck together gets forced into the oposite direction - popping it loose- as oppose to grinding it loose going in the same [forward] direction. Maybe it's a caliper that needs to be lubed, but I still think it is more prone to be the e-brake...either way it needs some lube/check for tolerences.
whatcha think?

Re: "Clicking" noise when tranny put into Reverse
Hopefully if other cars are doing it, the clicking noise is normal...I have noticed sometimes it is one click and sometimes 2 when going from Park to Reverse on a cold start...I'll ask the dealer but given I had to diagnose the IC water pump for them (after they put in new supercharger and said opps that did not fix the problem), I'm not optimistic they'll have a clue...
Re: "Clicking" noise when tranny put into Reverse
I have noticed this clink noise since I bought my car. It does not always make that noise in the
morning, but many times it does. I've put 107,000 miles on the clock, and I've always been a
little worried about that noise, but no problems so far.
