Noise from engine
I have only had my SRT about 4 weeks. Noticed that sitting at idle in gear I can hear like a muddled tick/knocking noise. Seems more pronounced when it is sitting at a light and less when I put it into neutral. Does not sound like valve noise.
Took it into Chrysler dealer this morning. Mechanic listened to it. Said it sounds normal for that type of car. It seemed less when we had the hood open rather than in closed postion. He said it could be anything eg: even noiser fuel injectors.
Anyone have any thoughts. Hard to describe noise in an email.
Realize I can turn up the radio louder like my daughter does
.
May thow in a bottle of fuel cleaner to see if that helps injectors?.
Car seems to run strong and idle is good.
Thanks,

Thanks for your input. Come to think about it. It does sound a bit like a muffled diesel sound that you hear on those type of cars. Of course not that loud.
I know that all cars have their own unique sounds. Not having another SRT around to compare to. Thanks for your input.
Enjoying the car and have a few minor mods on the way.

It should sound like a Sewing Machine..
A light ticking sound is normal and Healthy!
I worried about this and still do on occasion. I've heard others that are quieter and some that are louder. Mine is more pronounced on the driver's side. There is also a little black canister just off of the driver's side wheel well that is used for emissions. It ticks also which adds to the rest of the noisy engine. Our SRTs are hand assembled too, so i'm not too concerned.

I have to question why this should sound (even in the wildest imagination) anything like a muffled diesel?
It is not and has never been associated with Mercedes Diesels.
The fact that it changes when in neutral indicates the ticking merely is directly associated with RPM.
BMW started out building air planes so should a BMW sound like one of their old fighter planes???
Yes, I do ***** and rant alot (so I have been told) but where does some of this logic or should I say LACK of logic come from?
Jake, I hope this helps you to realize it is to your benefit to accept automobile advice from some members with a grain of salt.

Montana,
First of all I have thick skin and can take input. Good advise as well as bad.
It is hard to describe a noise. Was just wondering if any others had similar noises. Sounds like some do and some do not.
When I can meet up with a few local SRT's I can compare the sound.
Thanks for the input that is why I joined the forum.

Well, because it sounds like a diesel. Most of it is the use by Mercedes of noisy fuel injectors. Fuel injectors are like tiny little pumps. These happen to be noisy.
I've noticed a small amount of valve lifter noise, which tends to go away after the engine warms up and oil circulates. There also was another post about a solenoid or some such on the engine that clicks. I think it was part of the emissions system. It's a heck of a lot quieter than my 63 Buick or 82 Jeep engines!!
