Default Oil Pressure Too High ?

Greeetings Fellow Forum Members,
Once again I seek your assitance with an unusual problem.
I have a warning message coming through the odometer. A picture of an oil can and the letters "HI". I looked it up in the manual and it says the oil in the crankcase is over filled. I check my aftermarket oil pressure gauge (which has it own sending unit) and it's pegged at 110 psi. at all RPM. I had the oild changed and had the oil going back in verified against the car specs (and the dipstick) The oil level is at the dipstick mark but I still have the warning in the odometer and the 110 psi on my gauge.
Has anyone else experienced this situation? Sounds like I am heading back to the dealer (under warrenty) but I would appreciate any info on this condition. Does the oil pump need replacement?
Thanks,
mark

Get the level where it needs to be and try disconnecting the battery for a while to clear out the computer. Then check for a ground on your AFTERMARKET guage or sender. Sounds like it's shorted out.

Question Re: Oil Pressure Too High ?

110psi is high, you only need about 10psi per thousand to overcome centrifugal forces. Much over that is power robbing and terrible loading on the oil pump drive mechanism. If your pump does not have a bad relief valve, then you may have oil that is the wrong weight, and depending on the location of the pressure gauge in the oiling system a partiallyplugged oil filter. My relief on a prepped Pinto used to go over 100+ on startup due to a broken relief spring that jammed the pop off valve assy. Fixed that fast, an oil change is in order and I use a CLEAN drain pan in the sunlight to search for tramp metal and trash in the old oil, sometimes you can find metal and a magnetic probe will tell you steel, or aluminum, brass and copper from fittings and bearings are visible by color.

Let us know, Woody

correct me if I'm wrong but this engine is suppose to have high oil pressure at idle. I remember reading something like 120-130 psi. someone can post the specs from the online manual.

one reason for the higher pressure is because of all the special piston oil spray tubes in series, talk about pressure loss. this helps remove heat from the pistons, also I'v yet to pull the pan but ther may be a windage tray keeping the oil in the case away from the crank, so you need to keep the alluminum cylinders lubricated or els you'll have a bad day, this isn't a cast iron motor. those cyclinders are coated with a very thin layer of carbide or something. you need lots of luberication, to all parts of the motor, hence the higher pressure to feed all the oil ports

I get the same problem as you except my light comes on spontaneously, usually while driving hard or just after driving hard. Warns me for about then seconds then goes away. I have yet to bring my car to the dealer as this happens rarely maybe half a dozen times in six months. Is this a big deal? Should i get this sorted out asap?

High pressure is a restriction in the system. Check the filter to make sure it is correct and not crushed and he didn't leave any o-rings or paper towels in there, also what weight oil was used

read the repair manual before assuming your engine has a problem. could be part of the design..

Hate to ask what may be an obvious but you mentioned an "after market"
did you put it in?
Did you have the oil can appear before you installed the new guage?
Have you disconnected the guage to see if it still is getting having the problem?
Mike

DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - CHECKING ENGINE OIL PRESSURE
1. Remove the oil pressure testing plug (1) at the base of the oil filter housing.
2. Install oil pressure test gauge assembly.
3. Start the engine and monitor the gauge readings CAUTION: If oil pressure is 0 at idle, Do Not Run engine at 3000 RPM.
4. Oil pressure (engine at operating temperature): Curb Idle 34.5 kPa (5 psi) minimum 3000 RPM 300–724 kPa(45–105 psi.
5. If the oil pressure is 0 psi at idle, shut the off engine and check the pressure relief valve; it may be stuck open or have a clogged oil pickup screen.
6. Install the oil pressure test plug and tighten to 10 N·m (89 in. lbs.) after testing is completed.
