Default SRT Maintainance after purchase

Hi and mrry XMAS to you who celebrates on the 25th.

Any hints and tips on SRT maintainance? As I have just bought the car some pointers to what to look at would be grand.
Cooling pump, how can I determine if it is good or needs changing?
This Oil catch can business, is it really necessary to change?

Regards,

FUBU

Hi FUBU. Biggest maintenance cost I've had on my SRT-6 has been tires.
Even the regularly scheduled maintence has not been as costly. Keep a
check on your fluids (can't check the tranny, normally), and run a 92 or
better octane rated gasoline.

Your car, as you may know, will tell you when is is ready for regular
maintenance. You should check your brake pads, and check for any signs
of oil or water leaks. Might want to invest in some SS brake lines.

On the pump. you'll know if its bad if the supercharger works sometimes,
but not others (after having warmed up). Johnson pump is a good choice
for a replacement. As my car was under warranty, I let the service center
replace with OEM both times mine failed. It has now been several years
without a failure.

Catch can is optional, though it will help keep your engine cleaner.

Good luck, and a Merry Christmas to you!

Coyote

I do all maintenance on my cars. The SRT6 is easier because it's designed for maintenance service and I enjoy doing it. I have the lift, tools and code reader. I change no8 spark plug under the dash on my Sunbeam. Not designed for service. Gary

Personally, I believe a good synthetic (Mobil1 0W-40) is key as these engines run hot. Look through the manual -- there is not much regular maintenance. Have your battery tested (in the states, we have auto parts stores that do it for free) and consider rotating your tires (same axle, side to side) to prolong their already brief life. Otherwise keep your ears open and know what it sounds like when running right, so you can detect anything unusual that could indicate there is a problem.

Thanks veryone or your comments! I will do a regular checkup myself and also do a MOT test (state testing vehicle institute). As I have been riding a N/A I am not familiar with the SRT speed, hence I will not know when the pump is failing.. any hints? Have a nice new years!

Trust me - it will be REALLY easy to know if the supercharger is not working because the loss of the 100+ horsepower it provides will be VERY noticeable! So if the SRT feels like your N/A, then the SC is not working, but if it wants to break the tires loose in first and second gear and/or slams you back in the seat when you floor it at 65 MPH, then you know it's working...LOL!

open the pass side acess panel. start the car and rev it to 2000 rpm. reach inside the panel and feel the pump. it will be vibrating as the fluid goes thru. if you feel a loss of power feel the pump. if it insnt working its bad

when i first put the catch can on i didnt see much oil. after another oil change i drained the can and got at least 1 oz. out. thats oil that would have gone thru the t/b into the manis and clogged everything up. for the price it cant be beat

Okay thanks for the tip. And hop I'll notice a nice diffrence while driving.
Is the catch can reasonably easy to install? I guess there is a thread on it so I will go hunting. Otherwise 360 will get angry

order new mani gaskets as the easiest way to install the catch can is to remove the manis and clean them while there off.

I'm having overheating problems i loss power and the supercharger shuts down after it heats up. i'm idling fine at around 700 starting when it starts to over heat it's idling at about 650-600. I already changed the temp gauge sensor or what ever and im about to change the water pump. dose any body have any ideas of what it could be? thanks

I replaced the ic pump with a Johnson pump when I first got the car from auction about a year ago. Do you think it's gone bad already? It dosent feel the same when it over heats then it shuts off the supercharger but then it will cut back on after it cools off way sooner then the I/c pump then what I remember.

The symptoms you describe are identical to a failing oem i/c pump. One has to supposed even Johnson pumps can fail.

I would say replace your ambient temp sensor. If it is telling your engine that it is really cold (-36) outside, then your engine will be dumping fuel to try and maintain temperature....causing it to run hot and cut off the supercharger. It is a $12 part that you can replace your self, just plug and play on the driver's side lower louvre (lower grille).
