There are decent, respectful young people...
The kids who worked the car line when my daughter was in elementary school all wanted the Crossfire to stop in front of them so they could open the door.
It brings out the kid in me, too.

After nodding yes, one of the boys walked up to me and asked if he could shake my hand. He said he had never seen such a beautiful car. After shaking his hand, I looked up to see the others had lined up behind him to do the same.
They walked around the car talking amongst themselves pointing out all the styling features. I asked them if they wanted to see something cool and opened my Lambo doors. I swear they almost fainted. They asked if they could take pictures and I said sure and asked if they wanted to sit behind the wheel for their pictures. It was AS though I offered them $1000 each.
After taking pictures for about 10 min they all again shook my hand and again expressed how much they were impressed by the car.
Overall, very polite and well mannered kids.
My buddy and I were laughing all the time. He told me he would not have believed it had he not seen it with his own eyes. Then he asked if this kind of thing happens often. I replied, not to this extent, but I constantly get positive comments.
He said that he rarely gets comments on his car. BTW he drives a late model Porsche Carrera Cabriolet.....LOL
I LOVE THIS CAR !

That may be true, but not in this case. These kids were genuine. Read the rest of the story. They hung around for almost 15 minutes taking turns in the drivers seat and taking pictures.
these were decent, polite kids. Considering how they can act and the way they are protrayed, it was quite refreshing to see there are good kids out there.

My conclusion is based on someone that deals with these kids each day. I read the entire thread. I am telling you as a fact that any teenager that walks up and says "I want to shake your hand" is being a wise crack. After they saw the lambo doors and talked with him it turned into a serious encounter and they were genuinely interested. That is when the good behavior and everything positive about the encounter occured. But their initial approach was that of an immature wise crack... designed to look good (and humorous) in front of their peers. This is a fact!
I am just telling you that if I saw a group of teenagers walking up to me and asked to shake my hand I would give them the boot and tell them to get lost. You people need to stop attacking me because this is a fourm and I am only speaking the truth. I am not trying to crap on anyones thread. I am simply telling you how the teenager mind works today. Ask any young educator in middle school and they will tell you exactly what I am saying.

A teenager sarcastically shaking your hand in a classroom is a totally different scenario than a friendly gesture over a car.
I get the most sincere compliments from two groups of folks:
- The baby-boomer generation, and older. These guys have lived enough life to appreciate a beautiful car when they see one, and many I've spoken with say it reminds them of the classy sports cars from their heyday. Just last week, an elderly gentleman I had never met before walked up and said "Son, that's one fine automobile you got there". I thanked him, and sat and talked with him for quite a while, as he hearkened back to the old Studebakers and 30's era cars.
- Children from age 2 to 16. As we all know, kids are candid. The young ones (6 and under) waste no time in restraining the "WOW" statement, and "Cool car dude". As they get older, they tend to ask more about it, what it does, etc. There is a pack of teenagers that ride bikes/skateboards through my neighborhood on a daily basis, and they stop and talk to me every time I'm out washing it. They love it, and have asked how they can "get one" when it's their time to get behind a wheel. Kids these days YEARN for approval, nothing more and nothing less. If you simply come off your high-horse and give them genuine attention, they'll love you for it.
I smiled and said "I'm sure you would. Thanks".
It's a shame that my current generation's healthy 'adult' life is forfeited by their refusal to put others before themselves. By the time they figure out how dumb that stance is, they're up in their years and the calendar has fewer pages left to enjoy life. You can't go back and be nice to people once you've run out of friends.
Bottom line, don't be so d@mn cynical. Not every kid wants to make a fool of you. As Karl suggested, many are still genuine.
Careful who you cuss out and dismiss... these "kids" are the future generations that will vote on laws to keep your humble self plugged into life-support.
Yeah, but it just matters who you run into. Some people are cool and some are d!cks. I don't think the generation matters.
I had this totally rappy looking kid come up to me and say "Sweet whip yo!"
That was cool. (true story)

If a kid I didn't know walked up and said "is that your car"... I would say yes. If he stuck his hand out and said "that is a really nice car" then I would say he was geniune and gladly shake his hand.
The question alone "can I shake your hand?" to a complete stranger are words of a wise crack no matter what age.
This kid only became genuine and respectful after the fact... but the initial encounter is questionable.
I guess the way our society is headed (parents that shouldn't be parents, low education scores and a young generation not prepared to function in the corporate world) it is no surprise I am the only person smart enough here that sees behavior for what it really is. Our society is blind as to what is going on around them which is why we are falling apart. I could spend a whole day talking about the problems in our society and how to fix it... don't get me started

When I wrote the story I didn't think it necessary to add the fact that the first young man did in fact ask if it was my car. Now that you know this fact, as you mentioned in your post "...If he stuck his hand out and said "that is a really nice car" then I would say he was geniune and gladly shake his hand..." you can accept it for what it was.

BTW, like John I also work with teens a couple times a week. You can't lump teens together. Just like you can't lump how someone from Texas acts compared to someone from California. Two very different worlds.

All I am saying is that if someone stuck their hand out to shake my hand I would. But if someone asks "can I shake your hand?" I take that as a wise crack and would not shake his hand.

If you think I was seriously interested in shaking your hand then you better check your wallet as I slip it out of your back pocket!

Of course as usual you've turned an uplifting thread into a petty argument.
