What can cause a Transmission leak
Does anyone know what can cause a transmission leak when swapping out a flywheel? I had this done and the shop will not take responisbilty for the leak. They are saying swapping out a flywheel will not cause a transmission leak. I know, i have the worst luck. Checked under the car, its on the passenger side of the transmission but i was not able to pinpoint where exactly its leaking from.
The famous connector leak is on the passenger side. Jack up the car on this side (use jack stands for safety) and get under it with a flashlight and you will be able to see if its coming from the connector.
A favourite place for leaks is from the transmission connector If you do a search there's loads of info. Part is about $9 give or take. I had mine done by an independent MB shop for $200 including fluid(which is expensive) , but think you can get it done much cheaper.
I just had my flex plate replaced too and the connector was leaking so they replaced it while they had the tranny out....
I paid dealer price for the part and some fluid to replace the little that they lost, but it was still only about $50 so I was satisfied... and glad to not have to worry about it now...

No problem... I got the MB part numbers from 32Krazy and told the shop that there were only two choices and they knew which one didnt work... so they got the other one and it was correct....DUH!
MikeR, Can you tell me what colour the fluid was the was leaking. I have a leak that I think is from the connector (the only damp area under the spotlessly clean undercarriage). The fluid that leaked onto the floor appeared over the winter after it had been parked about 6 weeks. It was about two tablespoons full at most. I cleaned it up and it appeared again in the same timeframe.
Since I've been driving it, no leaks at all. The liquid was clear to yellowing and was very thin. Almost like the Synth motor oil. It had no appaling smell or taste (yeah yeah, idiot - I know!!)
I thought the tranny fluid was red. I'm trying to figure out what it was. Any thoughts on what yours looked like?

John,
When my tranny fluid leaked from the connector, it was RED. If engine oil, could yours be from the Valve cover gasket....also a very common issue?.

I could tell you that it is red..... but I cant prove it as I didnt see any leaks or drips on my garage floor... I did notice some wetness on the front of the tranny when I was under there.... so my leak was in the early stage....
clear or yellow..... hmmmmmm... do you have a cat? YUK!
Oil leaking from the valve covers would be black just like any other dirty oil....
Light color oil might be power steering fluid or yellow brake fluid....
that's all I got man....

Thanks guys. 180 had similar suggestions and I sure do think it looked like clear engine oil. When I had it on a hoist two weeks ago, we looked all around everywhere and it seemed like it was localized to the tranny area. The engine is spotless and dry everywhere. Anyway, no leaks now! I'm sure it will resurface when I park it for the winter.
I'll keep my eye on it, regardless.

When my Valve Covers were leaking, I removed the splash pan, and looked up at the oil pan and the under carriage engine area, it was obvious that oil was present (outside of the engine).
Another sign was engine oil caked onto the insides of the splash cover itself.
The point is that if your Covers are leaking, typically the oil on the underside of the car is usually obvious...
