Default Looking to join the family!

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to quickly introduce myself and say hello! My name is Kevin and I'm from the Metro Detroit Area. Like all of you, I'm a fellow car enthusiast and I love all cars. I currently own a Acura RSX Type-S, and owned a Cobalt SS Supercharged before that. I'm also a motorcycle rider and ride a 08 Ninja 650R.

I've been looking at replacing my current ride simply for the fact that it's starting to get up there on miles, and even though it's been really good to me since I've owned it and more so for the fact that it's paid off I'm looking to purchase a new vehicle to replace it. I graduated from U of M 3 months ago earning my B.B.A in IT management and was fortunate to land a full time job in my career before I graduated and now with having a 50 mile round trip daily commute I really want a new car with lower miles.

With that being said I've always really liked the Chrysler Crossfire and always was a fan of the SRT-6 and just decided to look them up and was really shocked at what they are going for. Which was why I decided to join this forum and ask!

I've already looked around and went pretty far back in this section looking up information which has really helped me get a good idea about owning an SRT-6.

I'm looking to pick up one with low miles considering that I can get one with pretty low miles for ~18k which is definitely within my price range.

My main question relates to assessing the reliability of the Crossfire SRT-6. Considering that I pick one up with around 25k miles I won't have to replace anything off the bat will I?

It looks like the IC pipe, and the wiring on this model has some known issues. Is there anything else that I should know?

And to give you guys some more context, I'm looking at picking one up and using it as a DD. Might keep the RSX Type-S since it's paid off and use it for the winters, but in the case that I have to sell it I might have to use it during the winter months in which I would invest in some really good winter tires, most likely just purchase new rims and tires for the winter.

It also seems that most owners don't really have any complaints in regards to the 5spd Triptronic transmission. I've always been a go manual or go home person, but the SRT-6 might persuade me otherwise...

From my recent purchasing experience, you will have a difficult time finding one with less than 36,000 miles. They are now going on 5-6 years old.

I replaced the intercooler pump on mine within the first 2 weeks of ownership, otherwise, I'm informed that they are pretty reliable.

I'm in Denver, and it's rained about 6" so far this month (that's a lot of rain, and unusual for Denver). I've found that my SRT6 is difficult to drive in the rain, and I even have new Continental all-weather tires. The rear wants to break loose whenever the pavement is wet. So I can't imagine trying to drive this in the winter, and I won't. I'm sure it's possible, but I'm not going to find out.

I'm actually not having any troubles finding ones with lower mileage. This was one that I was looking at actually.

Chrysler : Crossfire | eBay

I've found quite a few that have had decently lower miles and most of them are going for under $20k used.

Some things that I read was that this car is a pain to do maintenance on is that true? I read that just to get to the oil filter you have to remove a plate/cover to get to it? I don't mind paying for 3 extra quarts than what I normally pay for but typically like to do my own oil changes.

What about tires? Are they a unique size/width and do they cost more to replace?

The cars are very well laid out and easy to work on. The staggered size tires are expensive to replace. SRT6 are not very good in the snow, I travel about 50 miles a day like you. I use a winter beater for a few months a year. The autostick shifts faster than a stick but will never replace a stick shift. I'm 6'1, I fit ok. Go drive a few and see if you can deal with the drive by wire, coming from the motorcycle side also, I still can't get along with the drivability of the car.

I have a love/hate relationship with my SRT6.

This website is a major plus also.

Doesn't the traction control switch help? I live in CA so snow and ice are not a problem but I do use traction control in rain. Of course with the SRT, you would have to watch the torque.

Thanks for all the replies so far everyone!

I can already tell this is a great and more mature community then many of the other car forums that I belong to.

In terms of winter driving, I'm already used to driving cars that suck, granted I never had a 50 mile daily commute that now really makes a difference, but my current ride, and Cobalt SS Supercharged both suck in the winter.

With my Cobalt SS Supercharged since it was a lease I kept the stock 18 inch rims but switched to P Zero Nero M+S all season tires. Which I'll probably never buy ever again, but traction and winter driving was less than ideal.

With the RSX-S I only have 16inch wheels but the car is soo light and paired with the front end weight bias stopping and lane changes also suck.

However I'm willing to invest in better snow tires on my next vehicle purchase now that I can afford to.

Again I'm hoping that I can just keep my car, but I'm quite aware that may not be possible.

Easiest (but not cheapest) you'll ever do, don't even need to get under the car. Oil filter comes out from above, as does the oil, with a vacuum device (which is the way Benz service does it), don't even get yer hands dirty

I don't think you're going to beat that mileage/price deal. But would you really have a 6 as a daily driver? You would get slightly better mileage out of a Limited, and have way more exterior color options.

Use the "W" option in the rain. the rear won't break loose so easy as you will now start in second gear.

My limited is a daily driver and I drove it the last thre winters in the snow. The SRT has summer tires and still, with care, one can navigate snowy roads. Hell, we bought it in February in a Northern Indianna blizzard

I would imagine hilly terrain might negate that idea for snow, but rain,,,,,,?

Metro Detroit is fairly level and ought to be reasonably clear of snow, on the main roads anyway, in winter.

Changing Oil is easy. Filter assembly is on top of the engine........and it's a filter insert, which makes it even easier. Other maintenance is better than most as well.

As far as traction, hell, I have PS2's on mine and use it year round. Rain hasn't been an issue at all. Snow is another story.......... I'd say avoid it at all costs unless you have some good winter tires.......... but the boys and girls up north have said they can navigate in reasonable snow depth but it get's pretty dicey as depths get past 3 inches.

Good luck with your purchase. I love this car!!!

The ESP switch also affects traction on slippery surfaces.
