Default Manually Cranking the motor

Has anyone had to manually crank their motor?

I'd like to make an assesment of valve timings etc. and would like to manually turn the motor through a couple of revs with the valve covers off.
I'm guessing

first action is to remove one plug per cylinder....
slip a rod in the auto stick cover and place the tranny selector into manual over-ride = N.
Then.....
Any critical pointers?

Yea I'd for sure read the Manuel. Our cars automatically run the starter until it starts once the key is turned.

I am assuming when you say manually, you mean by wrenching the crank balancer bolt by hand?

Removing one spark plug will make it easier but not totally necessary. Its an automatic transmission, no need to take it out of park to spin engine over.
