Default New Windshield: Dealer or not?

Unfortunately I need a new windshield for my SRT.
I'd like to hear from those who purchased from a dealer & those who went elsewhere.
Difference in price & or craftsmanship?
Any input would be great, thanks.

They do not make a aftermarket windshield for the Crossfire. So it will be the same any place you get it. Just use any good auto glass installer. That is what the dealer does.

The dealer will probably have a local glass company come out to do it for them. This is what most dealers do. I worked in a pontiac, gmc, saturn dealer body shop about 10 years and never put a windshield in.

How did you get them to claim it under warranty?

the car sat for a year on the lot before i bought it. they clayed the car on delivery. after a while i noticed that the window was very pitted and made driving into the sun difficult. so I asked them replace it. 12k on car now service expenses to date $90.00 they are replacing the side door seal next week after they realign my door/window. somebody in the body shop thought it would be easier to drop the door than adjust the window. I will be taking the tsb's in for the door adjustment and rear hatch rattle. I don’t think the service tech read the tsb as step one says look at latch if metal replace then move to step 2.

I just called my dealer & they out source their glass.
Come to find out it was the same company that just put a new windshield in my Ram pickup.
There are no aftermarket windshields as of now. The crack in my glass isn't that bad at the moment. I think I'll wait a month or two & try again (if I don't get caught in the mean time).
$245 + tax for glass & $125 for labor.

If you can cover the crack with a dollar bill and it isn't in your direct line of sight they can fix the crack. Check the yellow pages. It will cost less than $50.00.

I am wondering if the size of the crack is a state by state thing. I was told that if it is larger then a quarter, they would have to replace the windshield. I had a rock ding that was just about the size of a quarter but by the time the local independant glass guy got to my car the stresses in the glass opened up to about a 50 cent piece. Watching them replace the glass and removing trim is kind of like watching an operation on one of your kids. Cost to me $0; a few years ago my insurance agent recommended that we go with a zero deductable on glass breakage. I have had 3 windshields replaced, one in each of our vehicles, in the last 2 1/2 years because of rocks.

That could be true or there are more than one company repairing the cracks. They may have different requirements.
