Default Brabus/Startech Exhaust

I took a run up to meet a fellow forum member this morning (good to meet you Ron!) to collect a Startech exhaust. It had come off a damaged Coupe but wouldn't fit Ron's Roadster due to the silencer box being too long.
I mainly bought it because it was a bargain and too good to pass up, and I wanted to use it as a pattern for a 'homebrew' set up so I didn't need to remove the stock system from the car.
I am not sure exactly what a Startech 'system' comprises but I now have the cat-back rear box/tailpipe section two Brabus twin-cat pipes (parts 170-600-60 and 170-600-50, I assume the '170' relates to the SLK platform). I am assuming that the Startech 'system' you buy from a dealer is just the rear cat-back section, as this would appear to fit straight on to the stock cat. The Brabus cat pipes are a larger diameter and look like they will fit straight on to the headers, but there is obviously a missing 'Y' section to join them to the tail section. I think they may actually be for an SLK. Incidentally the standard pipes on mine are different each side - the RH side has a round section but the LH side is a very flat oval section which looks very restrictive!
I will probably fit the cat pipes and fab up a dual silencer system at the rear.

Does anyone have a pic or a drawing of the complete Startech system?

Here's some pics:

I have never heard of these, please enlighten me. How expensive what are they known for? Quality, performance, unique sound? They must not be common are they sold in the states?

Since you have it hanging around in the garage, what's the OD of the pipes, 2.5" ?

The cat pipes are 2.4" OD but the header connection at the first cat necks to 2". The rear section is all 2.7" OD.

Brabus/Startech is a German tuning company that specialize in MB performance accessories and conversions.

http://www.startech.de/

Their stuff is expensive but good quality and well engineered. They are the ones who offer the 6.1 litre V8 conversion that costs more than the original car! The Startech range of accessories is actually sold through the DC dealers here in the UK. I have no idea what this setup sound like or if there is any performance gain, but the quality looks top notch. I actually much prefer the look of the OEM tail pipes though!

I am sure they are available in the US since their tuning 'Programs' cover the Pacifica and Sebring which we don't get here anyway.

Thanks for the pipe sizes... I was just checking because when the car gets back from the cage install I'm having a racing exhaust system built, sans cats, with dual 2.5" OD pipes straight back to two Dynomax Bullet (race only) mufflers and 60 degree turn down tips.

We have a 95 db limit on sound at all race tracks here in CA, so we use a turn down tip to dissipate the sound a bit as we pass the sound check station. I'm hoping the Db will be fine, otherwise I'll have to install glass packs before the mufflers.

PS: I bought another rebuilt 112 engine from Metric Motors and we're going to start working on some internal mods.

Sounds Good! (pun intended ).

You could try a Supertrapp if you still have a noise problem:

Sound limits are becoming more of a problem here too. Most tracks here allow 98 db I think. There is a static 3/4 revs check and usually a 'drive by' mic out on the circuit too. I got black flagged a while ago running the Striker (4 cyl 1200 cc!) - someone from the local village actually phoned the circuit to complain! Ridiculous considering its an old military airbase where they regularly fire up an old Lightning jet!

In terms of engine mods, do the regs allow you to alter the induction system? If so how, how about junking the fancy inlet tract switching lump and fitting multiple throttle bodies? I've been looking at http://www.jenvey.co.uk/ running with Megasquirt but using the stock injector/fuel rail arrangement. I just wish I had the time (and money!) to have the car off the road long enough to do all this stuff. I've still got brake duct bits to finish...

I can do any mods I want, but will get re-classed based on mods (points system)... Right now, in TTD, I am one point below being re-classed in TTC which would put me with much higher HP cars. I am trying to keep the car in TTD to be competitive.

I might try some underhanded mods that the tech inspectors won't be able to notice... But, since the season is well underway, I am out of the points running till next year... This will give me the time I need to dial-in the car...

I can install the Schrick cams w/o getting hit for points... I can also do a complete "Extrude Hone" (port / polish) on the engine. Might be able to hide a NOS wet system somewhere in the car... LOL

And I'm definitely looking at getting rid of more weight by having some body parts fabricated in composite materials.

If I had a big bank account this would all be done immediately, but I'm on a budget too...

Here's what I have in mind for the tailpipe. The system will be dual all the way but I will weld the rear silencers into a single assembly, exiting through a single triangular outlet.

Be sure to let us know how it sounds and how loud it is once you have the custom system installed.
