Catalytic Converter Failure
My Crossfire Coupe reached 14,000 miles in April and I started to feel a bumpy tick over, infact quite jolty. I then noticed a rattle under the car, I took it to the garage immediately and they told me the catalytic converter had failed...At least it is still under warranty I thought. They fixed the problem and told me they had never heard this problem in this car and at such low mileage. Low and behold its August and yep, its failed again, this time though, they say its the other side... Has anyone else had this problem with there Crossfire ??
only common on cars that are driven short trips ... the cats barely reach operating temp where it will burn up the carbon and blow it out the tail ... use more gas pedal and drive it longer, shouldn't be a problem ...
so they did cover it under warranty as they should have, right ?

My Roadster at 15,000 kms (9,300 miles) started making rattling noises from underneath, so booked it in for them to look at, and they say the Catalytic Converter needs replacement, the internals shrink, causing the rattle.
They are saying to replace the one that is rattling, they have to replace 3 of them, (there are 4), I guess as they come as a whole piece, and the whole job will cost around
AUS $2,000, (US $1,500), but it is under warranty.
The Service manager (who is American), was saying in the States, the exhaust warranty is 180,000 kms, but here it is only 100,000 kms, the same as the rest of the car.
The car gets mainly long drives.

The Service manager I spoke to said the internals of the converter are like a honeycomb type material. I'm sure if there was damage from hitting something they would have told me.
The car is never off the bitumen.

There is a type of stainless steel chain-mail that lies between the shell and the Platinum honeycomb, it was most likey installed incorrectly at the factory. Most likely not enough matting in there or it slid out of shape why they where pressing the cat into its shell.
If the dealer will let you keep your old parts, I would ask for the cats back, because there is about $50 - $60 in Platinum and Pladium
