Secondary Air Pump CEL
Hello Guys,
I am trying to by pass the secondary air pump on my xfire as it is fried! I am displaying the CEL and registering the P0410 fault code.
Is there a way to by pass the pump and fool the ECU into swtiching off the CEL?

No, the car turns on the pump then it monitors the O2 sensors to see a change. That's why you hear the pump run for a few seconds when you come to a stop light. It's "testing" the pump. I bought my car with a fried pump, I ripped it apart and found the plastic brush holders where melted. Well, I JB welded the brush holders back to where they should be, then filed them nice and smooth and the pump has been working for 9 months now. It looked like hell but once re-assembled you can't tell.
I will have a go at dismantling the Pump, but I have read numerous threads on this forum about not needing this pump and being able to run the car on a daily basis without it, as I am now. I haven't any issues without it working other then that annoying CEL!
Right, it will not affect the operation of your car. It is mandated emmision control. I fires up to warm your cat. convertors faster at a cold start. Try to repair it, if you cant you've lost nothing.

Thanks for your help Tunaglove. I guess then that the only way to get rid of the CEL is to replace or fix the pump. I hope it is repairable - they cost over £300 new! I'm gonna check the PCM too as I have read that these are prone to going wrong, which may have caused the pump to get fried in the first place.

If you look at the wiring schematic in the repair manual you will see: control wires going from PCM to the the Relay Contol Module. A relay closes on command from the PCM and sends current through a 10amp fuse to the pump motor. There is no way the PCM could see or tell if there is a load (or resistor) on the relay running the pump. It knows of the failure because the O2 sensors didn't change voltage when the pump was commanded.

You can trick the ecu into thinking the pump is still there by using a load resistor, just measure the load across the contacts on the pump.
I've disabled my air pump, as it causes the a/f ratio to be erroneously lean. I still have the CEL but it doesnt bother me. Right now Im working on the load resistor fix to see how it works out.
There should be a way through the PCM to disable the air pump.

Thanks for your advice, I disconnected the battery on Saturday to check the RCM, which looks like new. I also checked the pump (incase it miraculously came back to life!) but it was definately fried. Upon putting everything back together again the CEL is gone! Now I dont know why - but I'm sure as hell not complaining!

I'm just waiting, keeping an eye on it, no sleep, just watching carefully from a distance.....the minute it goes off again... POW!...I'm gonna disconnect the battery again!
