Default Transmission Dip stick

I didn't see a transmission forum so here I put it.

I am getting things ready for a 50K trans fluid/ filter change soon. Today I found an old trans dip stick out of a van. Measured out 60mm and 70mm and marked it. Put a handle on the other end. Sounds easy to check with the right tool. Any tips would be appreciated.

I would mark it every 10 mm. Then you dont have to get the tranny hot to measure it. Also the black cap with the benz logo on it just pops out its hard to do it with your fingers so get a flat head. I just did the tranny flush yesterday on mine. Its a small fill hole so your also going to want a funnel.

Thanks Cass.

The reason I only marked two spots is that is the temp I will check it at. The trans runs mostly in that heat range, so that is where I want the measurement most accurate.

How long does the dipstick need to be to work with our transmissions?

mrphotoman the tranny tool is m/b universal. meaning its longer than needed. when inserted it hits the bottom of the pan and measured from there. the tool sticks out of the tube about 8 ".

james use an infrared temp tool to get the trans temp to 180*F and check the level. also dont forget to put the magnet back in the pan. the black cap on the tube has a locking tab which must be broken to remove the cap. a red tab to replace it can be purchased at your local m/b dealer for about 1$. when the cap is installed the red tab goes in the slot and locks in place

To work the IR gun needs to be looking at a dark object, metal gives the wrong readings. Emissivity errors.

I did a write-up on this, using a long wire tie.

I also found that if you overfilled the tranny with fluid, the excess will be PUMPED overboard. The tranny will froth the excess and push it out of the vent.

I did the measurment thing and found that it was more MISS than HIT. This is how the overflow pumping was found out.

WOODY - enjoy
