Desperate for help with Clutch
I just picked up a used 05 roadster and the clutch is slipping. The repair shop in Scottsdale telling me the following:
- The xfire has a dual mass flywheel which can't be turned so must be replaced.
- They can't find any cross reference between Chrysler part numbers and Mercedes so have to go with the more expense Chrysler parts.
- Can someone verify that it is or isn't a dual mass flywheel.
- Can someone help me find Chrysler to Mercedes part number cross references for the clutch, throwout, etc.
cant tell you what the labor is but oediscountparts.com has a clutch disk for about 260$ plus shipping. use a 2003 mercedes slk320 as the car. its the same driveline as yours

Dual mass it is, go on ebay and you'll find SPEC clutches there. Different performance specs to them. Do not go to Chrysler, you'll only get a MB one at twice the cost, shop around.
Frankly I cannot see it costing more than $1,500 with the clutch for $800, no flywheel required. Lets face it, it's not brain surgery. Can't take more than four hours at most on a hoist. Dealerships use book rates for a blind mechanic with one arm.

according to my parts website the disk, pressure plate, throwout bearing are less than 600$ with free shipping 4 hrs labor at 100 per hr totals 1000 plus 10 % for shop fees 1100$
Thank you all for taking the time to respond. I really appreciate it.
32krazy - what website are you referring to? oediscounts.com shows the disc for 270, the pressure plate for 232.50 and the bearing for 211.50 for a total of $714

Thank you. Wasn't trying to be picky just thought perhaps you had another site I should look at. I just checked ebay and can get a complete Luk kit for $734.71 so your point is well taken.
I'm going to bag the high end shop that was quoting $3600 and go back to my small independent garage that quoted me $2000 and do some dickering. I suspect they were marking up the parts and overestimating the time it would take.
Thanks again to all who responded. I'll come back and post the outcome.

I going back to the first garage today and see if they will allow me to furnish my own parts and also see how many hours they are quoting.

The first quote I got was from an independent garage that did some work for me on another car about a year ago. They quoted me $2100. Then I went to a high performance tune shop recommended by a forum member. They quoted me $3,600. I'm sure this latter outfit would have done a very top notch job but $3,600 just seemed out of line. In their defense, their quote included replacing the flywheel which is about a $1,200 item. I posted on the forum for recommendations for a reputable repair facility in the Phoenix area and only got that one suggestion.

I just got an email back from an Ebay seller who claimed to have a complete LUK kit for $735 that would work on the 3.2L Crossfire. I asked him to verify that it would work with the dual mass flywheel and he said no that it would not.
Now I'm growing concerned. This car is my only transportation when I'm in Az. If I order parts from someone like oediscountparts.com and then take the car into a shop and they tear it down and find that the parts I've purchased off the internet won't work then I'm without transportation for several days while I try and get new parts. Plus stuck trying to return the parts that are incorrect.

I bought this xfire from a Nissan dealer in Phoenix. Much to my surprise I was contacted by one of their service managers this morning and he suggested I bring the car in and let them look at it. After two different mechanics test drove it and they made an attempt to adjust the clutch followed by another test drive, they acknowledged that it is in fact slipping. They apologized for not having caught that prior to selling me the car and asked if they could keep it for a week to repair it. They even offered a free loaner car. At this point I'm blown away. I'll be back in 7-10 days to report the outcome. If it ends up being as positive as my experience today I'll be calling them out by name in nice bold letters.

I work in the Nissan Dealer Parts Information Center (DPIC) and I will be happy to give the praise where it's due.

I promised to report back so here goes. I bought this roadster from ABC Nissan in Phoenix. 3 weeks and 700+ miles after taking delivery I realized the clutch was slipping. Took it back to ABC and here is the outcome:
6 Calendar day turnaround
Rental car
New clutch, throwout bearing, pilot bearing, and slave cylinder
Total cost = $0.00
Not only did ABC Nissan take the total hit on this but they couldn't have been any friendlier, helpful, and courteous if they had tried. I probably paid more for the car then if I had bought it from a private party but if you're dealing with a standup dealer like ABC it's worth every penny.
