Default Temp problem

Hi

I drove my XF from toronto to windsor today which is about 400kms and the need went a little bit over the half way point when i got to windsor. i thought the problem was with the long drive, so i turned it off when i parked it for 2 hours and then went out for a spin, and the temp needle would go over the half way point just a tiny bit, and then would go under the half way point, never had the problem before

Sounds normal to me. When the gauge shows just above 1/2 mark, the fan comes on, and back down to just under 1/2 and fan goes off. It is a continuous cycle unless you are on the highway to get enough air through the radiator to keep cool.

When I was a new owner I read about all the cars that ran a needle under the middle line and worried because mine ran, and still does, a needle over the line. You don't have a problem but for piece of mind: Make sure you have no leaks. Make sure the coolant tank is at the correct level. Check that the fan is working. Clean the radiator if it's dirty or clogged with bugs .......... I'm sure I'm missing some more easy things to do but, as I said, I think it's more or less normal for the majority of us.

There must be a million threads about this here, all by new owners. I even started one, 2 1/2 years ago!

I don't know why they designed The car like this, but the default is for the fan to come on about 22 degrees F above the thermostat opening.

Since Friday, mine does not do this... I had the -10C fan mod done and now my needle never GETS to the halfway mark! Viva La BuckHead Import Service!!!!!
(And since it is -10C, my fan comes on 18 degrees F before yours does. Talk about "Peace of Mind"!)

EDIT: If you'd just looked around a bit, you'd have seen my latest thread "Temp Needle going too high?" in this very forum, down about 10 threads!

I would say it is designed for fuel mileage and to extend the life expectancy of the fan motor. I don't see a problem with the way it is.

This fan action is typical of all cars with electric fans. What is abnormal with the XF is that the temp gauge is a apparently a real gauge.

Some cars with temp gauges are non-linear- displaying flat between normal and hot- in order to avoid customer complaints. Before all the on board computers this was accomplished with a circuit within the gauge. Now it is programmed into one of the engine management computers.

I would rather extend the life of the V6 engine by controlling it's temperature better.

I suspect that you and James1549 are both right, and on the same page.

But still... I am way happier with my car the way it NOW is.

Mark, I understand your thinking and what you did can be a good piece of mind. I would do the same thing if I had a vehicle that I overworked or towed with.

For better than a year now, I have monitored my engine temp with the Ultragauge. Very seldom, even at the Dragon, temps never seem to go over 205° when hard working the engine. I don't feel that is dangerous for our engines.

Now back when I climbed to Pike's Peak Summit last year at CAA, the temp jumped to 214° at the high altitude along with the steep hill. Once stopped, the temp came right back to 200° within a minute or so. And yes the fan was running the entire time.

You know, it would be interesting to put a calibrated gauge on and see just what the temps REALLY are.

But anyway, I am super pleased with the mod and wish I'd gone over there a LONG time ago (like with the RED Roadster, for one!)

I am sure no damage will be done by letting the needle go up... it's just a peace of mind thing. (And I'll feel better this weekend when I am pushing it like I did on the fall Dragon run down the Skyway - trying to keep up with psychos like GraphiteGhost, 13dog, Jason.. you know, those guys.

yes the info comes right off the OBD2 plug using bluetooth to your GPS.
