Check Engine Light On
Situation: 2005 Roadster with 36 K miles - engine warm, amb air 60 F, sitting for about an hour, attempt to start, turns over great, does not start, wait for about an hour, engine starts with "Check Engine Light" on. Drive 20 miles to dealer - resets lights and advises: Engine code: Crankshaft sensor fault. Driveable; however will need attention soon. How soon ? Soon.... OK - Soon, (next week, I'm busy) About 250 miles, 3 days and 8 stops later, the engine exhibits same behaviour, turns over, won't start, "Check Engine Light" on. This time however we're 100 miles from a dealer. I should note: the duration between starts and engine restarts in getting shorter. After engines cools down it will restart, however the run time decreases each time. Flat deck called, car to dealer, rental car acquiried, crankshaft sensor replaced (3 days), $300 for the sensor, $90 for code reading, (second reading) $50 to install and all is well. Rental for 3 days ($250). Triple A covered the flat deck (Thank heaven). Lesson learned: If the car sends out a code - fix the problem IMMEDIATELY. The engine now runs cooler and idles smoother. Listen to your car and save money......I wish I would have...
FYI... Here's a DIY by OneHundred80 that 'splains it all:
