Given his clear disregard for DJ's request, he could say he had cost over runs, and with no contract which states a clear completion date, put a bill on it which is more than the car is worth. I would get it and leave with what I could. Repo guys are the best when it comes to stealth... in and out.

I would offer to sell them the car. Try to get every penny and a few extra for your poor experience. It will be in their best interest to settle the matter amicably, but, it was in everyone's best interest for the set up to work.

That has been the problem all along. He has no money. He has none to return. He has to get the car running or he knows DJ will come at him with an atty. So, he won't be buying anything. I have seen this around custom shops before. Guys get in over their heads and lose their cars, but this time it is in reverse. The builder has got in over his head. A little more project than he wanted at a bad financial time in his business. Which he still hasn't figured out. I feel for DJ.
