oil or?
One of the things I would look at is the Mobil 1 0w40 has additives in it for mercedes and bmw aluminuim engines.
With 5w40 the number looks better but 5w40 is diesel oil and has different addatives.
I wanting the pencil pure plus when the get a 0w40 mix.
Look at why our 6 speeds have to be particular on which oil is in them because the synchros, addatives that are in other oils made for manual Trans will not work and can eat through the syncros.

Good point about the coolant temp being constant regardless of ambient temp but I'm not so sure oil temp would be directly related with pavement temps high enough to buckle asphalt. All things considered though I will probably stick with 0w40 due to other factors that were brought up. Thanks for all the thoughtful input.

I change every 10,000mi. Oil test after each change comes back as pristine. All depends on the additive package. I use LIQUI MOLY 5W-40 LEICHTLAUF HIGH TECH in the N/a for last 70,000mi. Most popular brand in Germany over Mobil & Castrol. Tops among Audi and Porsche drivers.

SRT gets Amsoil 5W40 Euro Formula every 10,000mi. And always use the designated fleece filter. Paper filters have been shown to start disintegrating after 3000mi.
Also notice all the 5W40 brands designated under spec 229.5...

My N/A looks like that after 110K. All it takes is Seafoam every other oil change!

the 0w40 means that when you first start up the engine (first time of the day) you start with the 0w oil, once the engine (oil) heats up your oil is 40w
older cars the tolerance was way wider, example .05 to .08, the tolerance today is tighter, ,005 to 008,,, so the 0w oil is the best for our engine and almost all import motors. where as only in the last few years has the US cars come with close,(Tight), tolerances. jim

a) In Florida and since garaged I use 5w-40
b) the main bearing spec for my '70 RA 400 is .0020" (.05mm) max for the mains and .0025" (.064mm) max on the big ends.
Looking here, the 320 spec seems to be .05 mm max for the mains and .067 mm for the big ends. Did I miss something ?
(Minimums for each is a lot less).

I looked at one in walmart also and it is NOT paper. I is two layers of full synthetic media that was wire backed and the o-rings were orange to match the Fram color I guess.
The orings look like a higher quality epdm, instead of normal flimsy black orings that deteriorate and can leak over time.

Ran across this AMG site that states that all 30W oils are * not approved for use in AMG engines.

You are correct, back in 1970 I used mostly straight 30 weight Vavoline Racing oil and changed after every race. Also used 10w-30 Pennsylvania oils in good running street cars and 10W-40 in ones with oil pressure issues.
By 1978 I was using AMSOIL in race cars. This century I use the factory spec dino and change oil & filter in the 2-3kmile range on my old cars (from the last century) and factory spec synthetic in the XF.
That said I tend to avoid boosted gas engines but can understand the supercharged and particularly turbochargers needing "more" since the oil can experience extreme temperatures (did I mention I also run engines a little cooler than stock (don't have to since the XF usually sits on 186F indicated.))
So it is possible that "something" in a NA engine needs synthetic oil but I doubt that it is the main or rod bearings.
ps I wouldn't want a 30W oil either, 5W or 10W max.

Probably stated that wrong. Meant to say all *W30 ( i.e. 0w30, 5w30,10w30) are not approved for use in AMG engines.
