oil or?
Were you aware of the maintenance costs when you bought the car? So you want to save some money by changing the oil and filter every 3000 miles, as opposed to using Mobil 1 every 7500 miles with a filter change?

How much are you really going to save? The sludge created by regular oil, should stop anyone from going further with your thought of using regular oil!

Got to Walmart the 5 qt mobile 1 0w40 synthetic is around $25 and a good filter $17.
The cheap crap not even in the right viscosity is around $15 a jug and $5 for cheapest filter.
So every 7600 miles in reccomended oil you will spend $67.
And 7500 miles worth of cheap crap $87.50 changed every 3000 miles.
Plus you would be using a viscosity that was not designed for our engines, or have the additives that is needed for the aluminum engines with the alusil coated cylinders.
We are all about finding better or saving money but bad oil is not how to do it and will coat ALOT more in the long run.
First thing I did when I bought my ssb was change fluids in everything so I knew what was in it and when it was changed.

(Well, unless you go with REALLY cheap oil. As has been said, Mobile 1 0W40 is really cheap at WalMart.)
I would ALSO caution you that, as also been said, 0W40 won't be available in conventional oil - and using anything heavier than 5W50 is warned against in these engines.
You won't save enough to make it worth it, gerry. I KNOW you have WalMart out there - run in there and get two jugs of 0W40 and stop by Advance or Autozone (NAPA will be pricy) and get a Fleece filter - they cost about $12 and you are good to go for around $40

The old adage : " better to be safe than sorry" really does apply here in it's most profound meaning...use the Mobil 0-40...I've used it for 120,000 miles with no issues whatsoever. ...Carl
I am in the Phoenix area and wonder if 0w40 might be a little light for the extreme heat here, and add to the mix the amount of heat the condenser creates under these conditions. I will say that the temp gauge stays right on center when running in the summer. Would any of you consider maybe 5w40?

I have 0W40 in there now, as 5W50 is damn thick in the cold - as testified to by my oil pressure gauge.
Click here for approved oils as per Mercedes:
MB 229.3 - Multigrade engine oils (Specification 229.3) - Mercedes-Benz Specifications for Operating Fluids
And what exactly impressed you about the o-rings?
YOu'd spend as much as using the RIGHT stuff and changing it at 7000 miles, so what is the point?

So, this got me to thinking....When we run the car in the summer it is usually to get somewhere cooler but that requires a hard hot climb to higher elevations. I don't think I would want to start the car the next morning in say Flagstaff with 5w50 oil. I think I have talked myself into running 5w40 year round unless someone convinces me that is a bad idea.

No, I'm just saying that with 5W50 the oil pressure REALLY runs high with a cold engine when temps are below 40-45F.
But when HOT, really HOT, 0W40 produces only 2-5 pounds of pressure at idle. That freaks me out.
Well, I have no clue what temps in the AM are in Flaggstaff - so maybe I should not even respond!
