Engine starts and stops after a few seconds
Engine starts and stops after a few seconds
2005 Crossfire Limited.
For about six months the only code I have had is P2098 Bank 2 Post Catalyst Fuel Trim System Too Lean. I replaced the 4 oxygen sensors but have not been able to solve it. The car has run fine with this code for six months.
I had a problem starting last week and replaced the Crankshaft Position Sensor without success and then discovered fuel pressure was not being maintained after initial build up. I replaced the fuel filter and that solved it. Ran well for a week.
This week it began starting and running for a few seconds then shutting down. I have good fuel pressure.
I cleaned the MAF and replaced the RCU (Relay Control Unit). No change.
At a loss. Any suggestions please?

There is always the camshaft position sensor, if you get one get a Bosch as some others do not work out too well.
Re: Engine starts and stops after a few seconds
How could I best check for a faulty cat or plugged exhaust please? Most posts seem to suggest the engine would idle, but not well.
The internet suggests vacuum tests after the engine is running. Since I can't get the engine running all I can find is a suggestion to loosen the connection upstream of the cat to see if the engine will then run.
What do you think?

Re: Engine starts and stops after a few seconds
I had the same code P2098. My car ran OK the exhaust sounded normal, but I found a split seam on the catalytic converter driver's side. It could not be seen from under the car as it was split open on the top and not visible from the bottom. I found it be getting under the car and moving a short piece of garden hose along the exhaust from the manifold rearward towards the tail pipe. I had to remove that section of exhaust pipe with the converter. Get it up on my work bench so I could weld/patch the seam . That was over two years ago with no trouble since then. My car ran even with the code, so I am not sure if the two; Code P2098 and the no run are related.
Re: Engine starts and stops after a few seconds
I would think there would be a temperature difference on the exhaust pipe from one side of the converter to other if plugged. The temperature of the exhaust pipe could be checked on each side of the converter.
Does this make sense or am I way off on this?

Re: Engine starts and stops after a few seconds
Thanks Wadsworth. A mechanic has told me a significant temperature differential occurs across a good catalytic converter after the engine has run for 10 minutes, with the downstream end of the converter being hotter. I’m not sure what to expect after 4 seconds, but if I can get hold of a temperature scanner I will give it a try.

Re: Engine starts and stops after a few seconds
I changed the camshaft position sensor today with a new Bosch item - no improvement.
To recap:
car starts and runs for 2 - 4 seconds before shutting down. It does this again and again.
there are no current trouble codes
fuel filter has been replaced with new Bosch unit
relay control module has been replaced with new Mercedes unit
fuel pressure is good
cleaned the MAF
cleaned and reconnected the contacts on the PCM. No corrosion
crank position sensor and camshaft position sensor have been replaced with new Bosch units
trying to find a way to check for plugged cat/ exhaust, but think I’m going to have to unbolt the cats to test for this
any more suggestions PLEEEEEASE anyone?

Re: Engine starts and stops after a few seconds
SOLVED!
When I last posted I was about to disconnect the exhaust to see if it was blocked. After having a relative put his hands over the tailpipes we found that pressure was developing in both of them during the 4 seconds the engine was running and therefore assumed the exhaust/cat was not blocked.
Someone suggested it might be the key transponder antenna ring around the ignition keyhole. I think I eliminated this by sitting in the car, using the remote to lock the car and activate the alarm, then putting the key in the ignition and watching the alarm light stop flashing when I turned the key to the on position. My logic was that the car "recognized" the key, but that may be wishful thinking.
My relative decided to try something new: he disconnected the electrical connection to the MAF. The engine started and ran, not well, but it ran!
I had cleaned the MAF earlier but not checked it in any other way and it was not throwing any code.
A new MAF sensor solved the problem.
Lessons learned:
My troubleshooting was not cheap but I now have spare Crank and Camshaft position sensors and a Relay Control Module, and I'm pretty sure it cost no more than taking it to the dealer..
Thank you everyone who made suggestions.

Lessons learned:
- A bad MAF will shut down the engine within seconds after start up.
- The engine will run with the MAF disconnected electrically, so this may be a good way to check for a bad MAF.
- A bad MAF does not always throw a code.

I'm SURE it would have been thousands if you took it to a dealership. NEVER take these cars to a dealership (well, almost never). There is hundreds of forum owners who would challenge your statement above. Just saying!
