Best HID Kits
Best HID Kits
Many people have explored the options if adding HID kits to replace the factory head/fog lights. This topic is to list kits that have been the best and easiest conversions to install. If you are one of the lucky ones to have chosen a kit that has worked perfectly, please post details to help guide others wanting to go down the same path.
Re: Best HID Kits
Morimoto H7's from TheRetrofitSource - not cheap - but high quality, great service, and 5 year warranty. You can also get them in 4700K - not as blue as most of the EBay kits.
1. CANBUS compliant.
2. Shielded leads.
3. High quality bulbs.
$150 a set.
1. remove your headlight units to install ( you'll thank yourself later when you don't lose a spring clip into the housing).
2. with units removed, you can mount the ballasts on the flat surface under the units ( out of sight ).
3. use a small socket on the snap on cover as a template for cutting out a small hole that the grommet from the kit will fit tightly into.

Most of these HID kits are 35 watts ala BMW etc.
I found 65 watt kit that will give you sunburn if you jang around in front of them too long.
I discovered my projector lenses are grubby, turns out this is burned on dirt from the air in the lamp units.... im gonna strip the lamps to polish the lenses if i can..... apparantly the output will ne better and the light pattern kinder on oncoming traffic.... will advise :-)

I can think of 2 reasons HID's are legally limited to 35 watts.
1) > 35 watts throws too much light in the eyes of oncoming traffic.
2) > 55 watts could cause damage to the housing, lens etc.
But, I think you know this already...

Sorry, Max, I should have known that you would never make such a mistake ........

Re: Best HID Kits
Seems like every time I find an HID seller on eBay with a good product, they go out of business. Seriously though, I have had really good experiences with the "regular" sized ballast cheapo 35w HID kits off eBay over the years. However, a lot of sellers have switched to selling a newer "slim" HID kit these days, which I tried on my SRT-6, until it promptly failed less than four months later. Bought a new kit (only $35 after all) of the regular ballast setup and have been working great ever since.
It seemed like the slim ballasts needed a relay installed, but I am too lazy for that - then one of the bulbs just died (was flickering before).
The regular ballast bulbs work great though.

Re: Best HID Kits
I got the cheap e-bay Xentec specials with the slim ballasts and they do not come with the rubber gromets for an easy install. Get the ones that Maxchicon suggests in his stickied HID write up. They come with ballast mounting brackets and the gromet with the wires running through them to easily mount and make water proof with the existing caps.

"1. Every bulb assembly I've seen comes with a grommet integrated. "
From his write up.. things have changed.. several emails with my vendor over this and he stated this is the way they are now.. without the grommet. So before purchasing you might want to email and see if they have it or not. And by all means go with the grommet if you can find it..

Guys, I know it's a bit big, but I know I could make this work:
Amazon.com: Daystar KU20040BK Black Universal Firewall Boot: Automotive
If one had to, turn the extra length inside-out to shorten it.

Re: Best HID Kits
FYI - my "slim ballast" Xentec kit experienced the same problem. I think its because, for whatever reason, that kit needs a relay. The flaring (it was in the passenger side bulb), continued - and after a while if you looked closely, that bulb was always constantly flickering slightly. That bulb or ballast ultimate kicked the can (I didn't check which one). And I replaced the Xentecs with the original China regular ballasts. No flaring even since.

Re: Best HID Kits
Wow. That would be ~ $26 bucks for a watertight solution that doesn't look like a mess of kludges. Too many beans for you? It's half a tank of gas!
Or do you pump 85 to save a couple of $$'s?

And this coming from a diy catch can enthusiast? Guess the needswing can was too many beans for you?
And as a footnote.. what is it.. 16 bucks for new bulbs..with the rubber grommet (at least shown with)... so need I say more?

Re: Best HID Kits
And some people actually think they make a $5 cup of coffee.. when in reality there are just some people that will pay $5 for a cup. One born every day as they say. I know my setup wont win a 1st place "underhood" trophy.. but with the 26 bucks hell I'll just go buy one.

Needswings charges what they can for their catch can. It's worth it. I just so happen to be able to make my own. For far less. And far prettier to boot.
I also happen to like getting "underhood trophies".
Do the replacement bulbs come with integrated grommets? Has anyone checked? If so, this is a moot argument.
