Smile Double Din Dash Kit - Teaser - Far from done!

Sooo... just got my Crossfire September 2018 and I miss my all-option double din stereos. I hate to Frankenstein and spend money on salvage parts so I've been modeling a design that I'm hoping will be an easy 3d print! I have split the components into 3 parts. Thought I'd show a sneak peak... the HVAC and 2 din were styled originally to the factory styling (center spline) but the lower ashtray/airbagindicator edge areas where the switches will be are rounded and softened. Had to put the badge nice and centered, but have been thinking about leaving out and wrapping in leather, I think the soft edges might be a plus with wrapping. A little feedback?

If you offer this one day, please make it available without the crosefire/chrysler emblem as well for a clean look. It looks good!

Looks like a great project, and I would definitely like to see the printed part and the surface finish you are able to get. Are you thinking ABS? I assume you can also print all the mounting points integrally, or will it have a different attachment set-up?

I also think I'd prefer not having any logo printed onto/into the parts. Folks could always add a custom Crossfire or small (chrome) Chrysler wing, if desired. Your leather wrap would definitely be a bespoke touch that would make your car stand out, but I personally prefer a "hard" surface stack. The factory silver looks good to me, although I'd much prefer a carbon fiber look.

180 did a fantastic looking "old school" physical modification of the factory parts, but I'm intrigued by your project. (Kudos, BTW, for your technical proficiency in designing that!) Please keep us posted!

NEW TEASER... Well I removed the logos, added the switch plate, and have taken the angles a little further (worked better with my software and I am rather pleased with the new look). I plan to do this in ABS, and this will have factory posts that I want to line up with the factory bezels. I decided it may be better to include the shifter bezel because of my OCD and not wanting to tear into the factory OEM bezels. The 12v cigarette lighter moved, but have not added the airbag light location yet (had been thinking about moving this into the glove box). I figured this would be easiest to be in 4 parts (HVAC/DoubleDin/Switches/Shifter). Between each of the parts will have subtle overhangs that will help lock this in place. Contemplating putting a retractable cup holder and/or cell/storage area. Still have much to do before adding more. I am also working on a sleek custom windscreen design and something to replace the pitiful rear bulkhead storage bag. Keep the feedback coming guys!

Second Chrysler Crossfire - Double Din - Rendering.

You have taken on a mammoth task, and I hope you keep at it. I see you have added a second design while I wrote this.
I have some experience with making a DD Radio/AC bezel, I modified OEM parts and needed two OEM R/AC bezels, an ash tray module and a centre console bezel to make my project, my switches were moved to the centre console. These parts cost more than I would have wanted but this method had the advantage of using the original mounting screws, tabs and any profile in the OEM interface. The switch mounting tabs have to be sturdy, the switches could be bonded in place of course but that may not be ideal.
An option for you may be to get one Rad/AC bezel which are made of two pieces bonded together, remove the rear part that carries the mounting tabs and screw holes and use it bonded to your part.
Your top two parts should be one part as all the mounting points are on them and the screw holes are on the radio part in your drawing. Your lower switch section should clip to the radio section and use the lower ash tray mounting screws. Ideally it should be one part for strength. A second centre dash would save you time in fitting.
The radio should not put any load on the bezel, it’s weight being taken up by the centre dash. The material you choose must take extremes of temperature to prevent distortion due to heat. The OEM parts are a Polycarbonate/ABS alloy that gives the best physical requirements.

I am planning on making a one piece bezel with the switches in the bottom like your design before I finish paint all the parts. I have to think it over for months before the first cut. Meanwhile I am making four bird feeders that were meant to be Xmas gifts, there is more work than I anticipated though, maybe gifts for next Xmas?

Would it be possible to add this bmw cup holder mount to integrate a bmw removable cup holder? Like this link below. If you get rid of the ashtray there would be no space to hide a speedbooster. it kind of looks necessary though. Not a priority.

I would buy a shifter plate with that cup holder mount integrated. I can buy the mount and send it to you.

Likeing the bmw cup holder concept but really want something that would fold away rather than removable (ill keep this in mind though). Planned on keeping 4 seperate parts but adding a new attaching mounts to hold the new bezel together as solid sections while still using the same receiver post & clips to match the factory center console frame. The double din compartment is going to have a shell that structurally will tie into the original 1din frame for support (so other than cutting the bottom of the 1din factory shell and extend towards the bottom. Right now ive just been mocking the faceplate style and curves. Then ill be thinning the bezels and re-angeling to match oem layout. There will be a back layer that will have all the posts to match oem locations, once set... ill combine the layers and prototype print to add any further modifications. Wouldve been farther but storing the car at a friends until i get my garage renovations dobe (havent always got the parts in view to meaaure right now). Thanks for the feedbacks!

I don't there's any way to make something fold-able that is not in the shifter's way.

Awesome project.

I started something similar to make a 3D printable button replacement for the ashtray, as that’s the hardest part in a double DIN mod in my opinion.

This is what I have so far. The original button bar will snap right into it (tested after 3D printing it). Maybe we could join forces?

Prototype of course lacks the paint and some details.

This is your bezel design. Your button section appears to be too short and too narrow. The length of the button section is determined by the heated seats buttons and these are the two outside buttons. Your actual button part is correct of course.

This is UrbanEs design below, your design appears to have some scale problemd to the actual parts.

Yes, I know the scale is off. I have been working on the overall, and will make the adjustments before prototype prints. My garage renovations were cut short since December 18 (haven't had a winter like this in the Midwest for 3+ years) and my car is being kept in a rented garage, so I haven't had direct access to all my bezels for exact measurements. This is really a mock photo.... My working model does not have the bevels and curves, this allows me to scale the design without the extra finishing bezels that can sometimes throw the design sizes when adjusting the major surface area of the bezels in my computer modeling software. I have already shortened the ash-tray curvature. The shifter bezel is no-where near exact, but easily customizable to be accurate. This is just the top surface, still will need to add all attachment pegs to hold the bezel to the actual console. I have really tried to keep the same ascetic as the original bezel, with the center spine basis of the whole car. I am not particularly fond of the Mercedes SLK bezels that are more recessed than the XF, and like the raised bezels with the tapered edges.

I also have a few other designs for added speakers within the car...
- Including a tweeter enclosure that will be located next to the seat-belt on each side of the bulkhead.
- A cup holder (modified from the center rear bulkhead cup holders that have been posted throughout other forums) which will include 2 X 3.5" speakers that should add extra mid-range spectrum, a few switches to add/control led accent lights and includes extra storage area (with my future intent to add the led controls for illuminating the custom acrylic windscreen).

With all this designs/ideas... haven't even made a decision on interior color customization yet. I am still swaying on the idea of upholstery leather rather than paint (which would have a little added foam padding on the armrest to soften the hard plastic) but until these become a physical reality have plenty of time.

like the cup holder a lot. This would be tons easier to do than the double din right? Maybe this is a good place to start first and see how that goes? I'd buy one I think...I don't like the cheapo cup holder I have there now. holders are not deep enough for soda bottle or coffee thermos, and whatever I try to put in there wants to spill forward whenever I brake.

Dimensional Switch Bezel with 2D Switch Holder Rear Layer Attachment Clips
UPDATE: Official Start Of Dimensional Design - CenterSwitchAssemblyCutout-OEM-Connection-
Finally made the trip and obtained all the bezels I will need for measurements. The uploaded image displays the switch bezel cutout and rear plug'n'play oem integration layer. (2nd rear layer clip housing for plug and play of the oem switches) Still needs depth extrusion of all pegs, guides and clips (matched to oem aperture). I have presumed this second plug'n'play layer will need to be printed in 2 parts and fused together, rather than printed as one piece to obtain better top surface layer print quality. Once completed, this will be recessed into the overall lower curvature atop of the shifter, and start the official dimensional blueprint for test printing. For now, I need a break from this!

To anyone interested in the existence of reproduction... I have not decided, or how this will be an option until the final printable draft has been completed (not to dismiss inquiry). All criticism is appreciated, but please keep it positive! Thanks

rea55id:
As for the center speaker cup holder... Unfortunately, this probably won't be completed until after the Double Din bezel. Waiting to upgrade my stereo head unit then add the non-existent rear speakers to obtain the needed mid-bass. Additionally, the design may change to the speakers being top-mounted and angled towards the cabin, just above the bulkhead to create a direct access channel for the internal wiring of the windscreen accent lighting while still adding the much needed cup holder move, More to come in the future.

So happy to see such an exhibition of owners, as in love with these cars as myself!
Thanks!

We really appreciate your hard work. I wish we could find a way to have a functionnal cup holder for manual cars but I definately understand that you do whant you want and have your priorities. Personally, I think the cup holders between the seat is unnecessary.

I agree, but considering the factory cup holder is a sheer flop. I will be replacing the oem cup holder for the bin, just not completely setup to print the abs plastic required.
The best CH option I've had is to add to the rear bulk head and if customized add more storage (the addition of speakers is my custom concept that once I have my overall plan in my head drafted out should be pleasing to the eye and functional, at least I hope it will be "lol"). I have worked a few models of "pop-out" cup holder but haven't found/designed one that keeps the oem styling or clean lines that I prefer. Only time will tell.
