K&N filter Questions
I've heard many discussions regarding the performance of the K&N air filter, which apparently have none or little improvement in HP and MPG.
So my next question is, how easy is that to clean the filter? Is it time consuming? Is it a dirty or messy job? How do you apply the oil, do you just spray them on?
Also I found this cleaner & oil kit on Amazon, is this the correct one?
http://www.amazon.com/K-N-99-5050-Fi...dp/B00029WYVW/
and how long would it last? good for a single time cleaning? or how many times? Thanks.

Cleaning the filter is pretty easy. The kit on Amazon is the correct one.
Basically all you do is spray the filter with the solution, rinse it, and let it dry (a few hours). Once dry, you re-oil with the K&N oil. Instructions will be included with the filter recharge kit. I have had the same filter recharge kit for years and I've used it on multiple cars.
The filters are guaranteed for 1 million miles (I believe). I've never had one wear out.
I can't recall how often you need to clean and re-oil, but seems like it is every 30-50,000 miles or so. It should tell you in the supplied instructions.
Hope that helps.

Depends on what kinda drivin you do. For instance I have to clean and relube my K+N on the motorcycle about every 5-6K miles. Don't take for granted they'll stay clean for 30K+ miles. I'd give'em a look see at least every other oil change.
Just my two cents.
Just my two cents.
I've been considering a pair of those K&N cone air filters. But I've been wondering:
(1) If they attach to the two tubes extending forward just outside and under that engine cover (which I've yet not figured out how it is removed), how is it possible to get the filter cones on the cold side of the radiator? It looks like the only room for them is in front of the engine, but behind the radiator.
(2) Once the two new cone filters are attached, I presume one removes the two original air cleaner filter elements?

Love-em and wouldn't use anything else. Just coming up on 10K on my Xfire and have had them in for about 8k. I have the recharge kit and was planning on doing it one of these weekends.
I don't buy K&N filters for the horsepower or mileage claims ... I buy them because they are great filters, and last forever with simple cleaning. I put them in nearly every car I've ever owned. If not right away, definitely when it comes time to change whatever might have been there when I bought the car.

Of course there will be gains with K&Ns the technology behind them is simple clean less air therefore let more air in... the results will be a gain in performance, but on the other hand the engine will be dirtier than your basic oem filters... Tests based on our engines have shown decently large gains with these filters... In some cases people track their cars without filters completely and YES it does have noticeable gains, but for everyday driving this is not valid option, but K&Ns very well could be...
As for the recharge kit I guess you can go that route, but for the price they are selling might as well change them once in a while for new set...

<b> You are right, the filters will be on the "hot side". There is another ongoing link where a fella' has routed, "with no modification" using tubes down and below to the lower grill area.
(2) Yes, you remove the OEM filters from the air box.
