Cowl / Ram induction hoods
I got to looking at the car last night and the way the air intakes are layed out , and was wondering about after market hoods. If I could find a couple good hoods to make two molds off of for cowl and ram induction I think I might like to try this. Is there anyone currently making a hood? , if not , maybe it's time for me to get busy on it.
Has anyone else ever thought about having a different hood? I'm wondering just how many would be interested in an aftermarket hood with different induction properties.

But I'm glad you brought it up first. The placement of the airbox intakes sort of lends itself to a double hood scoop application. ala The Judge GTO's. It would be a ton of work, but I would like to see a design for a "Oudle Shaker" using the original sheet metal.
What do you think?
I would like to do an entire inner and outer mold of the hood. Have to come up with a good looking design that does'nt scream " I wanna be a late 60's muscle car". I would keep the trade mark lines in the hood , not sure of the ram design though , might be better looking to just do a 2-3 inch cowl induction. Yeah , I think that would look best ,but have individual intakes and not the muscle car looking stuff , aggressive....yet....stylish, and have it close down onto the intakes and seal off kinda like the ram air firebirds did. I'll get some ideas on paper and share them so you can really see what is trying to get out of my mind right now. lol
Now you're thinking... That's the most efficient way to build a CAI for this engine bay design... The TB is at the base of the windshield which produces a high pressure area under speed... You can also look at designing one that fits into the troff of the windshield wipers, but this is problematic because of the motor... Or, you can move the battery and use that space to build a collector box and "finn" the sheet metal of the hood above it...
Either way, by keeping the intake from running through the engine bay from the front of the grill, you will probably reduce the heat by double digit numbers...
Happy to see somebody else has studied this engine....

I think a smarter design would be to mimick the sl, or slk hood design, right where the heat vents are, you can chop out this section of the hood and mount a filter undernieth and then install the sl or slk hood venting grills over, and mount the srt6 y-pipe to connect to the two filters. this way it keeps the oem look, but not tacky looking with a big shaker mustang hood scoop, you have to keep it Euro, otherwise it will look gay on this car.

My current instructor (Climate Control Systems) is a Mercedes Master Guild Tech and he brought his SL600 into school today. THAT CAR IS THE SEXIEST THING ON THE PLANET!!!!!
He's cool as hell, and I understand that he busted his @$$ to accumulate his net wealth to pay cash for the car, I just don't need to hear about it all the time. Now that we've seen and touched the car, it's all good. I've been hounding him for the last two weeks to bring in the SL. Damn fine looking car.

I have been thinking about this for some time. What would work great is a "NACA duct". Do a GOOGLE search for this if you have not seen these before. This style was on the Ferrari F-40 and is popular with the Mazda Miata tuners. Very low key and would be perfect with the BDJ Racing Intake or a modified stock air box.

Above is a link to a company that sells them pre fab. I just need to find a donor hood to butcher!!!

I like the intakes on the Mercedes , they look good on those cars , but I'm really after a different look that's hard to explain. I'm pretty much going to take a stock hood and just raise a few areas of it , but it's going to retain the lines in the hood. I've already figured out the intake to hood design for sealing it up. Looking around for a good condition hood to take and start the mold making and reshaping process.

That being said, if you're implying that it's my car that screams, "I wanna be a late 60's muscle car".
Then all I can say is, "Mission accomplished."
Somebody PM'd me a while back, asking me just exactly what would it take to make my scoop functional?
I accidently erased their message, and I can't remember who it was that sent it.
But here (in this EBAY auction) is everything that is needed to make it functional on a carburated V8.

The final piece is designed to fit snug to the top of an air cleaner housing with a piece of foam rubber as a seal.
I think it would be very easy to fabricate a receptacle air collector to fit on top of an NA Crossfire V6 out of an old air cleaner housing, and take advantage of the existing snorkel to funnel the cold air back to the intake at the rear of our manifold.
If I thought for one second that doing this would improve my Crossfire's performance, I would have done it already.

Ok, I think I've found the answer for those of you who want a true "Ram Air" scoop, but want to retain the Crossfires original hood strakes. It's a little pricey, and I suppose it does scream late 60's muscle car. But it should get the job done.
