Default Manual Transmission Fluid: No service is required???

Hi Gang, --NOTE: this started as an *off topic* on SRT6, moved it here--

Question about MT6.....on cold weather the 2nd gear is hard to get and after reviewing recent posts about the shape of fluid differential i don't believe the "No service is required" part on our manual trans....(see service manual excerpt below)

Manual Transmission Fluid
No service is required or recommended for the manual transmission. If required, use fluid approved to MB 236.2.
SAE 5W-20 meeting API SL or GF-3 Engine Oil, such as Mopar part number 04761872AB, may be subsituted.

Question: May a Mobil1 extended performance 5w-20 do the trick? Or stick with Mopar (i.e:P/S fluid from mopar is the Pentosin CH11 S and so on...)
https://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English...nce_5W-20.aspx

Diid anybody service it's manual trans, i know lots did the differential. I'm just scared to death with the specs, double clutch slowing down at traffic lights feels like tranny is moving a lot of fluid but only calls for 1.9 qts...hence the question about viscosity.

"Manual Transmission Fluid 1.8 L (1.9 qts.)"

I used Royal Purple 5W-20 synthetic engine oil at 12K with great results. Shifts a lot better when cold and 1st to 2nd gear is definitely smoother.

Thought so....

Guess leveling the car properly for the job is key. Do you require a hand pump to fill it back in? I'm expecting to drain it and fill it untill fluid overflows thru filling hole.....same procedure as rear diff.... correct?

Have hands full this weekend with frt & rr differentials (mobil1 75w90) and ATF on winter car so XFire should have to wait but i'll report my findings after i replace it.

Thanks for input harbor

Level the car and use a hand pump or long tube with a funnel. It'll take 2 qts.

Rear diff drain plug will be covered with rustproofing gunk, so be prepared to invent some new cuss words as you try to remove it. I used Amsoil 75W-90 in the diff.

Jim, I knew you did the tranny fluid, something I need to do as well. But you have also done the diff? What is the reason behind this, do they use a sub par product from the factory or was it routine maintenance? Thanks, hope you are not freezing too bad up there.

John - Did the diff at 12K out of **** retentive maintenance issues plus wear & tear concerns of trying to keep up with IamFink2 at the past two Dragons and keeping pace with you & Molly at the '09 Woodward Dream Cruise.

Just had the factory techs (not dealer) do the double-wrench service last week. Car is running sweet!

Freezing? Had the top down last week-end and temps hit upper 50s today with full sunshine . May go water-skiing this Thanksgiving thanks to global warming! I'm fairly certain it won't even snow in Michigan this winter.

Thanks Jim

I think I may be contacting you this winter to get some recommendations on exactly what to use.

No snow, huh? You want me to quote you on that LOL

John - My priority for the 2010 Cruise is lining up better Saturday morning car wash attendants for you, FP & oledoc2u.

I would take a brunette or redhead, preferrably around 18-22 years of age I am sure Doc and FP could make due LOL

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead. I'm looking at doing a flush/fill of my tranny fluid as well using Royal Purple 5W-20 synthetic. Only issue is the manual calls for engine oil meeting API SL or GF-3...and Royal Purple is API GF-5.

Wouldn't that harm the tranny? Especially the synchros?

Any brand name SN - rated 5W-20 synthetic will work well: RP, Pennzoil Platinum, Mobil 1, Amsoil, etc...
I switched to Mobil 1 EP this Spring with a good result.

I have had it in mine for quite some time, seemed to improve the smoothness of shifts IMO...

Use a ATF oil with the newest MB specification for the 722.6 tranny, which is 236.14.
http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/d/d/en/Spec_231_1.pdf

Change also the ATF oil filter - that is important.
Level the ATF oil correctly. That's very important. If the oil level is too high, or too low, the transmisson won't work smooth. Both can harm the transmission.

I don't think we're referring to the automatic transmission in this thread

Went to swap out my transmission fluid with Amsoil 5W-20 yesterday afternoon, and I couldn't get the hex drive and ratchet in the tight *** space, lol. Is there a trick to this? Or should I just put the 14mm hex drive into the socket and use vice grips to turn it?

Did the differential fluid, that stuff was nasty black...no excessive shavings though
