Default Fan Always On - Over Heating (new Member)

Hi everybody,

I am a new member (uk based)

I have just purchased my first cross fire 2004 model 3.2 V6 auto,
it is 20 degrees today and when i am driving it the cooling fan is constantly staying on, the gauge needle is around halfway sometime a little bit higher, the car doesnt actually overheat but its worrying me.

There is no sludge in the oil or coolant tank so doesnt point to the head gasket, anyone got any ideas ? or is this even normal ?

Thank you u all kindly for your advice.

Chris

Mid scale is normal temp. Others can tell u about the fan, there is info about it under search, believe it is the switch control. Woody

Welcome aboard.

Thanks Woody,

Generally I think halfway up the scale in cars is ok, I felt i had a problem as the fan is constantly on when it is halfway, mind you the engine feels boiling hot when you open the bonnet up !

Hope somebody comes along soon to shed a bit light on the fan.

Thanks again !

The thermostat opens at 195F (right everyone?) and I read that the fan comes on at 218F. In my car, 218F must be a shade above halfway - cause that is when the fan comes on.

There is a software "fix" that you can have done that programs the fan to come on as low as (I believe anyway) 200F. Your car may have had this done by a previous owner. I intend to have mine done.

But it sounds to me like you are ok. The fan usually does not run at all until the water gets to 218F, however, if you turn the air conditioning on, the fan runs at a slow or medium speed - until, again, water temp gets to 218F.

That is my experience and understanding of how our car's fans work. Yours sounds normal to me.

Cool, Thanks guys,

I guess my last question is that is it ok for the car to run at halfway or just over all the time with the fan running ? Sounds strange but hey, just I dnt know of many cars that do that, driving round with the fan always going.

I might change the coolant to be safe?

Thanks

Chris

It's normal for these cars. Now, in cooler weather, mine only goes above half in town, when I get MOVING, it goes back down. But in the heat of this summer, it runs up at or above 1/2 all the time.

And no, I don't like it one bit! But everyone's does it.

Chris I have noticed my crossfire warms up real fast, is always baking hot under the bonnet and driving here in s.c weather being at close to 37c for the past few weeks I have only noticed my fan came on a few times!
The needle is mostly above the half way point...get in that motor and drive!! have fun I am.

cheers,
Maz.
