Default Oil changes

Good day all, we just picked up a very clean low mile 05, I know the dealer changed the oil, but he did not reset the trip for it, so I read up on it and did so.

My question is this, is it realistic to only change oil every 11k, sounds scary to me ?

I realize it recalculates as you drive depending on conditions and driving style, I was always told tha oil works best at the end of its suggested milage interval What are your thoaughts, I was thinking 5000KM. (Canada) as a max, I know synthetic is usually longer but I know this is a finiky little beast!

I change mine every 3-5k regardless of what the fsm states.

Same here. Went something like 5700 the first time, 4000 the second.

I just don't think leaving oil in there that long makes sense when, for $80, I can change it and feel better, safer, about that expensive engine.

There are places you DON'T cut corners.

the problem is when oil sits it starts to break down. Starting the car for short times just pollutes the oil further as it never gets up to temp to evaporate the impurities.

3-5k miles? which would be approximatly 8k Kilometers.

I would think that is as far as I could possibly go, your right cheap insurance for a high priced engine.

I will get a fluid extracter and do my own changes.

Thanks

The fluid pump is overrated. It takes 15 minutes to do it the right way and assures you that all of the crap comes out of the pan. Gravity does a much better job than any pump.

I have oil sitting on the shelf and you say its breaking down, gimme a break. Oil sitting in the sump does not break down, if its old and dirty the suspended solids will slowly sink to the bottom but the oil will stay OK. About the only thing that evaporates from the oil is water, everything else stays there.
Crude oil has sat in the ground for millions of years and its still good, it's just harder to get these days.

you misread my post.

once oil in the crankcase comes in contact with combustion byproducts (gasoline, blowby, etc) it starts to break down (thats what sludge and other associated things are) why do you think oil gets dirty? Byproducts, material wear, etc.

if left sitting in oil that never gets run up to operating temperature, the oil beings to break down.

I've seen plenty of built motors croak because someone left oil sitting in a motor over a long period of time. A buddy of mine had a built motor in his drag car, left it sitting with the same oil in it from the last runs he made, went to crank it up and as soon as the motor turned over it spun bearings, no oil pressure because the oil had broken down.

I've gone 6,500 miles since my last oil change & the FSS currently says I have 2,000 miles left before my next needed oil change.....so at a very minimum that will be 8,500 miles between changes. If you extrapolate a little.....it will be 9,100 miles . Makes the $70 for an oil change seem reasonable compared to the old days of changing oil every 3,000 miles......
