As you stated yourself, I'd be shocked to see Chrysler cover a fuel filter. Not only will he have to eat the cost of the filter, but Chrysler will still want their fee for telling him they can't help. Hell, Chrysler has a history of denying even the most VALID of claims. I've seen it happen all too many times (convertible top failure, anyone?).

In the event it's the pump, the pump supplied from Rob is a very nice unit. I'd hazard to say it's the same (or less) money.

The cheapest option for the guy is for a rich Canadian to send him the pump in good-will. That would truly be a nice "welcome" present.

The next cheapest option is ebay, bid and pray, hoping it will actually work.

If his dealer plays nice... then yes, his $100 deductible is the cheapest route.

just so you know there is a check valve (of some sort) in the fuel system,, if everything is good and working,,,turn the key the car starts,,,but if the check valve has stuck open, the fuel drains back into the tank, and for the car to start it needs fuel, to test this turn your key on (not into start) wait --count to 10, turn off the key,,, repete,, turn the key on (not start) wait then off,,,, then start the car normal, if the car starts within 3 cranks that is it.,
""Now you know the rest of the story."" jim

I never said anything about the fuel filter not being covered.
The cheapest option is for a guy with a spare fuel pump in Tennessee to send it to him.

I still have my old filter that I replaced for no reason other than I bought the car with 42k on it, and had no idea what kinda crap gas might have run thru it.
You are welcome to it, it was working fine when it was replaced.

PM me an address and I'll send it.

You're right, it was Miata that said that. But, we know the history of Chrysler.

Wrong, the chassis was sold over a week ago. I no longer have access to that.

Not sure I underestand problem completely, but I had a Problem with my convert. back in april. I also replaced my fuel filter. After I replaced with an Auto Zonu unit it worked for about 3 weeks. Then I had problems starting it. I had to crank and crank.. I checked the fuel rail pressure, and once car is shut off pressure drops to 0 immediately. That tell that the filter is stuck open. There is a valve in there that opens and closes depending on pressure . It regulates the pressure from fuel pump. once pressure is achieved, valve in filter opens. Mine was sticking open, therefore not letting system build up pressure. Hope this helps. You can rent fuel rail filter from auto zone . its free.

That is probably the issue here, I would suggest that anyone replacing any unit purchase a leading brand. Many of these after market parts fail too soon.

I also cannot see why people insist on changing the OEM filter before it is necessary, this is a large filter and it will take a lot of crap in the filter material before it gets plugged up and fuel these days is very clean unless maybe, you frequently buy it some old gas station in the boonies. Changing an OEM filter for some cheap Chinese junk (nice pun) seems rather senseless to me.

I would sooner pay twice the price and buy a Bosch item instead of a filter that uses cheap components and filters through a recycled pair of tights.

You guys are awesome, and you even offered the idea that someone ship me a pump which is beyond generous. I still don't know what I'll do, because the dealer I have the warranty with is over 2 hours away from where I live in chicago.

Oh yeah, I might as well ask this too since I'm at it. When I got the car, last year, the internal DOOR UNLOCK button never worked. Is there a way to cheaply and quickly fix this? It's not something very important, but it would be nice if the damn button worked so I dont have to lean over to open the door for the passenger if its locked after i start the car.

Bad news. Went to start the car to go to work and it took three attempts to start it even with waiting for the fuel pump to kick in for like 6 seconds each time. :/

Pump and/or filter it will not get better, at any moment this will not work at all. Remember Valkys experience.

from the sound of what you are saying try this ,, i do believe i said this in a post on this page. next time you start cold turn on the key ( not into start,,count to 10 turn off the key,, turn on the key count to 10 turn off the key Now start the car if the filter lets the fuel drain back it takes this system to get fuel to the injectors and it get the air out, try it you may find it will work,,, if it does go to Mercedes or Chrysler and get a new filter and or pump. jim

ps 6 seconds is not enough

I'll try that when I leave work because by then the car will be sitting for 7 hours at least. I called my warranty company and they cover the fuel pump replacement. Tomorrow I hope to go get it fixed if at all possible :/
Worst part about it is that I really like this car, but all these issues are putting a dead hold on the enjoyment I could be having driving it

Yeah at least I have the forum, and tomorrow morning I'm going to the closest mercedes or chrysler dealership to get the pump switched out. Which one do you think will likely have the part in stock easier?

He has an extended warranty purchased for the car. Haven't dealt with any dealers myself.. but you might get a "WTF" if you call MB for a Chrysler product.. lol. Is the fuel pump in the P/N cross references for MB parts? Could be handy to have if you call them.

DO NOT buy a pump or filter at the Chrysler dealer as you will pay the Mercedes price plus a very large mark-up.

You have an extended warranty....... use it, that's why you have it.

It probably is just one of the two parts that has failed, why pay for both if you insist on doing it and not using the warranty? The fuel system should be tested to find which part or parts are failing. Paying for both parts and finding the problem still exists would be rather upsetting.

It is all well and good for someone to say go to so and so and buy from them, but why replace and pay for a part that is 100% OK?

Some peoples loyalty to a vendor is sometimes suspect and there a hint of bias in it I fear, especially when that vendor is currently doing something for them or they are expecting some future involvement with them. I am positive that this vendor is very good but throwing out their name every time is like some people always saying that the battery or RCM at fault no matter the actual symptoms.

You mean I was mislead when I was told my low tire pressure was directly related to the 1/2 volt drop in my battery?
