Default Diagnosing engine noise

I have a noise in my engine bay which sounds to me like bearings going bad, but I cannot tell which component it's actually coming from. Does anybody know how I could accurately determine which component is the source of the noise? I know of three possible offenders. 1. Idler pulley. 2. alternator. 3. water pump. I don't know if anything else could cause this noise. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated...

Drop the belt off and start spinning things.. pull back and forth to check for play. Make sure you get the belt diagram!

Hey Mrmiata, thanks for asking. I haven't looked into it yet but I shouldn't put it off so today I'm gonna look at it. My daily drive is 3.4 miles through suburb streets to a "park and ride". The bus takes me about 10 miles to work downtown and then at the end of the day I drive the 3.4 miles back home. If I had a major drive to work I'd a looked at it sooner for sure...

Sounds like water pump to me. I had the same problem at nearly the same mileage.

You must have very good hearing, especially as he's in Texas and you are in NY. LOL
