Unhappy Burned plastic smell

After loading couples of beer cases, upon reaching home I notice a burned plastic smell coming from the rear of my 2004 XF.

Does anyone knows what it may happened and help me out with this.

Is it inside or outside? If it's coming from the outside, look to see if there is anything stuck to the exhaust. It's possible that you might have picked up a plastic bag or something off the road. It would melt to the exhaust and produce a burned plastic smell.

And why is a 16 year old loading cases of beer in their car?

Check your rear bumper right above your exhaust pipes. I have seen on another Crossfire, the under part of the plastic get melted do to intense heat of the exhaust. Maybe your exhaust is mounted a little to high, and the weight of the cases dropped the body down making it way to close for comfort.

I get the same smell when I run the car hard. The exhaust runs pretty close to the metal portion of the trunk. There is some sound deadening material that gives off that smell when it is heated up. Next time, pull up the trunk cover and put your hand over the area closest to the exhaust. You'll see its warm and kind of tacky.

Well that can't be good. LOL. I have a kick as* heat shielding company, that is going to design me a covers for the exhaust manifold, or possibly my dual intake system. It will depend on cost effectiveness. I'm sure we can come up with something that won't melt the under-carriage any way.

Actually its kind of funny. I lifted up the trunk carpet and the tar is forming to the bottom of the cover. I can see the metal from where the black tar / sound insulation melted to it.
