Odometer, tripmeter, outside temperature displays not working
Re: Odometer, tripmeter, outside temperature displays not working
"Stopped working" is not a symptom, nor is it enough information for anyone to give any meaningful advice.
What EXACTLY is displayed in the outside air temperature display?
What EXACTLY is displayed in the odometer window?
If you press the button to change mode of the mileage display, what happens?
Are any 'indicators' on? (Look at both ends of the instrument panel - are any indicators on?)
Re: Odometer, tripmeter, outside temperature displays not working
Both the outside temperature and the mileage windows are blank. Nothing happens with the mileage button either. There are no indicator lights on and just noticed the gas gauge isn’t working either. Everything else works and car runs fine.

A bit of a long shot here but the harness that attaches to the back of the cluster my have come loose
It’s a zero cost issue to inspect and correct.
If the cluster had been removed to access skreem module there’s a chance the whoever put it back in didn’t slide the connector lock back into place. That would allow the harness to come away over time.
just my guess and the only investment needed to correct it is time
Re: Odometer, tripmeter, outside temperature displays not working
Thanks for the reply. When I took the side panel off to check those fuses I loosened the fuse block and got my hand in far enough to check the plug on the near side and it’s locked. I couldn’t reach the other side.
Re: Odometer, tripmeter, outside temperature displays not working
One more easy item to check
interior fuses (drivers side part of light switch)
I’m not sure if you were in this area before or after your problem started.
if you had loosened the fuse block before the lights went blank, the issue may be tied to the fuse block.
Could it be the harness that attaches to that fuse block or the fuse in cavity 11 may be at issue (that fuse also appears to power the licence plate light. Is the license plate light working?
Another guess but it may be worth investigating. Again zero cost inspection.
hoping for speedy resolution on your issue
Re: Odometer, tripmeter, outside temperature displays not working
Thanks again for your help and input. I won’t get to work on it for a couple days, when I do I’ll let you know what I come up with. But, the license plate light is working.
Re: Odometer, tripmeter, outside temperature displays not working
Verify that fuses 35 and 37 in the underhood fuse panel are good.
Also, if you leave the key in the ignition with the car off, do you get the key-in buzzer?
Re: Odometer, tripmeter, outside temperature displays not working
Thanks, I checked and changed all the fuses just to make sure and they’re all good. And, if I leave the key in the ignition with the engine off the buzzer does sound. I have to pull the key to stop it.

That means the cluster is essentially powered up and functioning. I don't have an easy answer for this one, the service manual's diagrams of the cluster are intentionally vague.
Re: Odometer, tripmeter, outside temperature displays not working
It may be a defective cluster
Lots of replacement clusters available on eBay for a pretty affordable price. The mileage appears to be stored in the cluster. The time you take to trouble shoot will be way more than the cost of a replacement.
If you swap cluster, the mileage will be that of the cluster you swapped in from a donor car.

You cannot change the mileage
THAT makes doing a VIN search before buying a used XF that much more important! Didn't think it was that easy to 'roll-back' a car to a lower mileage...
Re: Odometer, tripmeter, outside temperature displays not working
Thanks guys for all the help. I really appreciate it. There’s actually one on eBay with the mileage within 500 miles of what my car has. It’s from a 2006 and my car is a 2005 but I’m guessing that shouldn’t be a problem because most other sellers are listing them as a match from 2004-2008. Have any of you ever changed one? Does the steering wheel have to be removed? If so, is the air bag going to be a problem?
Thanks again
