Troubleshooting & Technical Questions & ModificationsHave technical or modification questions about the Crossfire?
Find out the answer, or give advice in here!
I've searched this forum and the internet with no help for my sorrows.
2005 Roadster Limited 94K miles. I saw the BAS/ESP light illuminated. Wheel left/right no change. I was checking fuses under the hood and found #14 Diagnostic Socket fuse blown.
It pops immediately while inserting new fuse. While i was looking around on the internet, I found one Fuse Block Diagram that says the #14 Diagnostic Socket also has Steering Wheel Location on it. So, i put 2 and 2 together and and came up with a number that I'm really not confident enough with my math to share with you. But, I've read Clock Spring and BAS/ESP light are related.
Could my steering wheel Clock Spring have a dead short? I cannot get anything from the OBD (Diagnostic Socket) because there is no power to it. The shotgun approach, (which I generally will not use) says swap out a part (the clock spring) and see what happens.
I thank you in advance for any help or feedback.
You better keep looking in the service manual, the steering angle sensor is in the steering column, but it's before the clock spring.
I'd be quicker to suspect a bent pin in the diagnostic connector to be the culprit. If we can trust the manual's diagrams to be accurate, (and we can't), then you have limited suspects here: The diagnostic connector, the steering sensor or a wire somewhere pinched to ground.
Put an ohmmeter between ground and the low side of the fuse. PUt it in "audible" mode and if you have a dead short, start messing with the diagnostic connector to see if you can make the short come and go.
If not, take the trim off the column and go after the wiring to the sensor. Unplug the sensor and see if that clears the short. Don't throw parts at it until you have isolated where the short to ground is.
I thank ya'll for the input. I'll look at it at get back to you. I've had the car for 6 years and I've been able to do any repairs with just this forum. (And I've had to do some of the common ones)
is the CD service manual adequate? Or, is the actual book better? I don't have either, but I'm willing!
THey are the same and both are inadequate, incomplete, and borderline inaccurate.
But they are all we have.
Ive worked in electronics (JVKenwood, various dealers, etc.) since 1982 and I can tell you that all automotive manuals provide HORRIBLE electrical diagrams, the Crossfire is no exception.
Dearest pizzaguy and Zeracer,
I thank you both for your help in resolving my problem!
Pinched wires under the knee panel about 6 inches from the Diagnostic Socket!!
I was LOST! And you fellas gave me hope! And some great technial advice!
If either one of you is stuck in Phoenix with a dead battery at 3AM, call me! I'll be right over and you can stay the night at my house!

Thank you for coming back and letting us know what and where your short was! Glad your back on the road, and just think how much money you saved fixing it yourself! I've always said this is the best car forum I have ever had the pleasure to be a member of (of course there are always those few.....). Good luck, onward!

This is happening more and more. I worked on a car back in about 2018 that they had full heat coming out of the vents at all times. I looked and the duovalve had no power at all, and with no power, the valves are open wide.
So, I got to tracing, never could find where the break was, so I wired directly from the connector on the valve to the little fus box next to the battery, put a 15 amp fuse in line and the car was good to go.
As the cars age, we will see more and more of this. I gotta say, you did good tracking that down. I"m happy it was where you could see it and get at it.
