So if you have to drill out the retaining pin which secures the whole assembly to the column, what holds the ignition housing in place when you re-install it?? (The retaining pin is now gone - drilled)

put it into a vice and drill the same retaining pin completely out there is a small spring behind it once you see / hear or feel the spring pop out your ignition is fixed.
You will now be able to turn the key and see the locking mechanism move. Lube it up and re install.
I am so peed off. Standing at a traffic light waiting for green and then BAM a truck right over the hood. Car flat and written off by insurance. I can't find another one here in south africa anywhere so I guess its going to have to be a 300C or a lancer evo X. Still don't know

I bought a new tumbler and assembly and now once I put in back in the car. The car does start. It turns fine and powers up perfect but it won't start. Am I missing something. Also the steering wheel is not locking after I pull the key out. Could that be the issue ? Is there a lil trick out there to putting it back in and starting it. Help please. Thanks

check the transponder ring.
Can you be more detailed please. I'm not familiar with doing this. And I don't want to brake anything. The car also has been siting for 2 1/2 months. May that be a reason not start. The locking pin to the steering column isn't going out far enough the lock the wheel after we pull the key out. Any ideas or tips ?
Hello everyone. I have an '05 Coupe with 45K. Three days ago I had this exact problem. Today, with the aid of a buddy and reckah's step by step PDF; problem solved for FREE!!! I would like to say "THANK YOU!"
Well, the Graphite Roadster has been in my garage (pointed the OTHER direction from my sigline photo) since last Saturday. Tonight, after rehearsal, I will be tearing into it and seeing how my luck is at getting it fixed.
I just wish it wasn't so COLD, but I can't let that stop me.

Yea, I discovered that right away.
Ok, all went easy - then it was time to put it back together. I AM STUMPED!
I cannot get the lock assembly to go into the black channel on the side of the steering column! It goes in just enough to almost cover the little locking button that you had to push in to get the assembly to detach from the steering column. I then hit resistance, but it does not seem like it's in nearly far enough to run into trouble. I push the pin in, work the assembly in and just as the pin is covered, I run into a 'brick wall' and cant get it in any farther.
WHAT am I missing here?
I guess post 199 has my answer.
EDIT: Grabbing the assembly with vice grips and "working" it back into the hole in the column with a bit for force did it - took about 60 seconds.

I had a feeling that my ignition would lock up on me soon, yet I pushed this mod off and of course I was right. My girlfriend and I were stranded outside of an Olive Garden today in pouring rain. For over an hour I tried to turn the key until I gave up and called AAA for a tow. I'm able to turn the key slightly enough to unlock the steering wheel, but that's all the play I get. So tomorrow, weather permitting, I will attempt this mod. Wish me luck!
Well it took me a little longer fix it, but im finally done. I was getting nowhere with a drill the first night, so today I charged up my portable Dremel, bought a grinding stone and went to work. Three minutes later I pulled the ignition out. I was still unable to turn the damn key so I just opened the hatch, busted a Matrix move as I dodged the spring and hatch door as it sprung towards my face, and turned the key with ease
Never again will I have to fiddle around with that damn ignition! I urge those with a sticky one to drill away... before your stranded as I was! (Pun intended)
Thanks to all those who contributed to this thread and this forum for once again saving me tons of money!
