I had my ignition totally lock up on me! I came on here and got the info I needed to fix the problem myself ( The dealer wanted $1500.00 and a locksmith said around $500.00)
Job took me an 1 1/2 to take all apart following instructions and only 35 min to put it all back!
The funniest thing was, taking the locking pin and spring out only too me 20 seconds.

I know that this is an old thread, but I just want to thank everyone who was instrumental in putting together the "fix-it" for the ignition issue. It took me a bit longer than most, because I'm a literal sort, and I spent 20 minutes looking for the "park" cable -- I have a manual, lol

The instructions worked flawlessly, but I suck at putting trim back in place -- I swear that was the toughest part of the whole fix.

Again, thanks to all -- I love my car again!

 

I have to truly say thank you to all of the forum members who posted to this thread and also the original thread creator. I waited until my ignition locked(DONT WAIT!!!!), I started this process on a friday and gave up due to drilling of the locking pin seemed impossible, ANYONE STARTING THIS PROCESS DONT GIVE UP ON THE LOCKING PIN, IT JUST TAKES TIME BUT YOU WILL GET IT! I started again on Sunday and took my time and I was able to get the whole process done within 45 mins and saved my self a ton of money. I cant state how helpful i am to this thread for the information!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!

I apologize if this has already been explained but I couldn't find an answer. My 04 started getting the sticky key issue about 2 months ago, I read up on but was minor and I hadn't gotten around to fixing it. Last week it started bothering me, taking 4+ times to start, so yesterday I finally did the fix only to find that it had already been done on this car. I bought it used 2 years ago and it is a one owner car according to carfax. Talked to the said he had no clue what I was talking about. I have a spare key Chrylser cut recently and neither key works. Any clue why it wouldn't turn after this mod? Appreciate all the info you guys share here.

 

When you say 4+ times to start, do you mean 4+ times to get the key to even turn? It almost sounds like you mean the engine cranks but doesn't start untill it is tried 4+ times. Just want to make sure.

 

So you took the ignition apart and now it doesn't work.. is that the jest of things? And as a note.. sticky ignition has nothing to do with the car not starting once the key is rolled over to the start position. Fuel pressure (pump and or filter/regulator and or possible the CPS). My 04 has sticky key syndrome from the day I bought it.. sneaking up on 3 years now. Guessing the Wife's has been done as it rolls over smooth as butter.

 

The car starts fine as soon as it turns but it takes a few attempts to get it to turn. With the ignition out of the car it turns fine.

 

it sounds like the tumbler is acting up.. you could take the ignition with your keys,(being it is out of the car) take it to a lock smith and have them replace the tumbler and set it to your keys. I think, someone on here did this. jim

 

I know there are like 5000 posts to this thread... Sorry, I don't recall reading one report of it sticking after the mod. Maybe this is the mechanism just getting old. We'll see what some others think.

 

Are you really sure you did the mod properly? Did you remove the little cover and find no spring and pin under it?
It is possible that the interlock on the transmission is not set properly. If you jiggle the shifter does it make any difference when turning the key?

 

I didn't do the mod I took the assembly off and found that it was already done by a previous owner. The little cover was missing, haven't check wiggling the shifter but I will after work

 

wiggle the steering wheel also...

 

If owner said he didn't then try to look for the little cover inside.. maybe it fell inside and that's what stopping it from turning. try vacuum. Also some said spraying WD-40 in the cylinder helps? I don't know how safe is that.

 

Thanks to all for this great fix!!! Just finished this mod in under an hour including drilling the pin out. Used a burr bit that fits in a drill, took less than five minutes to gnaw the pin away. :>

 

Are we talking about keys that easily turn to the first position but then lock up from turning to the starting position? That is what a newly purchased crossfire with 82,000 miles on it is doing to me. If I play with it long enough, then it will allow me to turn it further and start.
