Re: How do I Jack up my XFire with a FLOOR JACK???
post 35:
"Jack the entire rear up by placing the jack under the pumpkin ( differential ) then put the stands under the jack points. Lower jack then go in from the middle of the car to the front center where you see cross member join and jack up front there. Place stands under front jack pads and Bob's your uncle! "
after studying your post i have some doubts:
regarding this: " then go in from the middle of the car to the front center where you see cross member join and jack up front there."
could you please elaborate?
i lift the car from the differential. this i understand. it is easy to identify.
then i place stands at the 2 rear hard points. right?
but, "go in from the middle of the car". does it mean that you slide the jack between the front and rear wheels and then push it forward?
if so, how far forward? " to the front center where you see cross member join"? could you be more specific? perhaps a picture of the underneath would do?
i want to make clear that all that you do and say is highly appreciated. it is just that with a car so sophisticated, sometimes is hard to find anything among so many things.
perhaps this pic may help? https://howtune.com/articles/204-rep...ire/image-4218
i guess is that hole between the 2 bolts that hold the diagonal reinforcement straps, right?
thanks again for all of this.

thank you for your input.
but am confused
this is another subject that is worth exploring.
you say that you dont trust jack stands to provide safety support..
others say that they dont trust jacks for that.
could you experts discuss this and reach an understanding?
thanks
Re: How do I Jack up my XFire with a FLOOR JACK???
there are jacks that have an extra safety. there is a bar that you insert when at the highest position so there is no way that it may fail.
an example is this:

this way a jack works also as a stand and we can have the best of both worlds.
Okay, I assume you will want to support your Crossfire at four points when you raise it: With only $520 (Canadian), four "gadget jacks" will do the job, and you don't even have to pay shipping costs!
Another poster on this thread mentioned using 8 inch thick wood blocks in lieu of jack stands, and I think that's a cheap & safe alternative - and they will stack neatly when not being used. Now, if you buy one jack for $130 (Canadian), you'll have $390 left to buy a few wood supports and throw a pretty nice party for your friends.

there are many alternatives. and i did not sugest 4 of those. if you think about it, just 1 can do for lifting, and for supporting, the cheapest way is wood blocks, as you say.
or 2 sets of stands.
i got these: https://www.princessauto.com/en/deta...ds/A-p8760696e (canadian $).
the point is to compare supporting with jacks or stands for safety.
and of course, low jacks are more expensive than regular, but as these cars are low, hence the need.
Re: How do I Jack up my XFire with a FLOOR JACK???
Made additional custom ramps out of pcs of 2 x 10's that lock into holes of purchased steel ramps creating an acceptable angle to drive the car on ( or back on) . Then if needed , jack up rear under the pumpkin & use 2 stationary jacks under rear pads for safety . The car is safely elevated .
I find the recent 3 ton Harbor Freight 3 1/8 " minimum height floor jack very handy for $100 . It has dual lift cyls & goes up fast .
Re: How do I Jack up my XFire with a FLOOR JACK???
Okay, so, I’ve read that the jack stands at Harbor Freight have weld failures. Can anyone recommend a good jack to lift mine up (is Harbor Freight okay for a good, low profile one)? There are a bunch on Amazon, but, I’m just looking for what’s going to work without breaking the bank. I appreciate suggestions as I have a few things to tackle this week on the car. Thanks!

Re: How do I Jack up my XFire with a FLOOR JACK???
First off, a jack stand does not lift a car, it supports it after a jack lifts it.
Look for jack stands that have a safety locking pin.
Look for a jack with low profile and fast raise.
edit - ( SORRY, I missread your post - ignore what I first said, the pictures are still valid. )

Re: How do I Jack up my XFire with a FLOOR JACK???
I not long ago bought the H F dual cyl 3 1/8" clear specifically for our CF for $100 on sale . Works great . I have a bunch of their stationary jacks , some w/ in the bad s/n group & some not . Have 4 supporting a 38 Ford coupe for yrs & not going to mess w/ them .
However , by no means am I condoning use or purchase of these jacks .
Also made extenders for my metal drive on ramps out of 2x10 pcs producing a gradual incline accepting the CF .

There are lots of M-B Jack Pads available that can be used with a Hydraulic Floor Jack. I've probably got a dozen or so, both aluminum & rubber, in my garage cabinet that I've used. I typically use smaller 2-3 ton Floor Jacks just because the lifting pad is smaller which makes it easier to position under the Crossfire's lifting point with a Jack Pad Adapter.
But if you're asking about one that works with a Hydraulic Bottle Jack, hardly any are available. However, looks to me that you could use a low profile M-B Jack Pad (metal versions are typically a lower overall height than the rubber versions) that would fit into the car jacking points. Then if you use a Bottle Jack Pad Adapter mounted to the jack's shaft, you could position this under the M-B Jack Pad & lift the car. Bottle Jack would have to be a stubby or low profile version as there isn't much space under the Crossfire rocker panel. I looked around last night for a M-B Jack Pad designed for a bottle jack but never was able to locate one.
Re: How do I Jack up my XFire with a FLOOR JACK???
I did find this M-B Jack Pad Adapter that is designed for use with either a Floor Jack or Jack Stand. Never saw this before - kinda interesting! Not sure if it fits the lifting point on our R170 chassis.
Re: How do I Jack up my XFire with a FLOOR JACK???
When I jack up my car to take off a wheel to get at the brakes etc, I always put the wheel under the door sills outside up and then add some wood to fill the gap as much as possible.
I do not trust the welded jack stands that I have and have never used them. I have never had need to jack up either of my Crossfires, so the question has never arisen.
When I changed the engine in a GMC Cargo Van in the early 90s I used 4 x 4s x 12” long cross stacked on each corner, it was as steady as the Rock of Gibraltar and l had no fear of going underneath.
